Amazon.co.uk Review
It’s taken a long time for Rowan Atkinson to bring us Mr Bean’s Holiday, the sequel to the substantial hit of 1997. But in that time, he’s lost none of what made the character so huge in the first place, delivering an effective comedy that’s again managed to ignite box offices right across the world.

The set-up for Mr Bean’s Holiday is in the title: the hapless title character wins a holiday to France, meaning this time it’s the French Riviera that’s the backdrop for the slapstick humour that has defined the series. And so Mr Bean finds himself in a series of increasingly unlikely situations, causing all manner of havoc in the process.

While unlikely to convert anyone who isn’t already a fan, Mr Bean’s Holiday is nonetheless a comedy that delivers reliable laughs very much in the spirit of what has gone before. Atkinson continues to inhabit the character with great skill, and it’s--rightly--his work here that brings the lion’s share of the laughs.

By most accounts, Mr Bean’s Holiday is the swansong for a character that’s manage to delight audiences worldwide for over a quarter of a century. And while the film is, truthfully, no classic, at its peak it’s a hoot, and offers gentle, enjoyable family entertainment. --Jon Foster

Synopsis
Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder Goes Forth) reprises his role as accident-prone Mr Bean in this sequel to Bean - The Ultimate Disaster Movie, set in the French Riviera. Eager for a break from the drab rain of London, Bean wins a holiday and a camcorder in a competition and heads off for the south of France, but soon enough his dream holiday has become just another collection of unfortunate and hilarious predicaments. When Bean attempts to catch a train while in France, he inadvertently separates a child from his father, which leads to the father reporting to the police that a kidnapping has taken place. Further chaos ensues when Bean is cast in a commercial and he goes on to disrupt the Cannes Film Festival. Rowan Atkinson once again presents his highly physical comedic style in Mr Bean's Holiday, playing the titular character as he bumbles about France, causing laugh-filled mayhem out of the simplest of situations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have made more of Cannes..., 28 Aug 2007
By Brian Levine - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I loved the last 15 minutes. I felt the sequence in Cannes - without any spoilers - was the best part of the film. Until that moment we'd seen nothing particularly new: ear-wiggling etc and other Bean-isms that are amusing but possibly inferior to the first Bean movie. I felt the first one hour ten was 99% Bean, and the bit I preferred was more 'balanced' by other comedic turns.

Willem Dafoe was extremely good in this last section, sending himself up as the egomaniacal Carson Clay with a girlfriend a good foot taller than him. Emma de Caunnes (Antoine's daughter) was very likeable and believable as Mr Bean's 'crush'.

Although Rowan Atkinson holds it together, I felt he could have done with a better script.

However, the extras show deleted scenes that positively made me yawn: thank God they were cut!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Anticipation and reality, 14 Aug 2007
By J. Deakin (Hertfordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

On a miserable afternoon, having heard some good reports of this film, my husband suggested that we should perhaps take my older sister (neither she nor we were particular Rowan Atkinson fans) to see Mr. Bean's Holiday. We were pleasantly surprised that it was so amusing, and we laughed so much. We came out of the cinema feeling our spirits had been 'lifted' by it. From the reactions in the cinema, I am sure that many, many others were of the same opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars gentle humour , 23 Sep 2007
A charming and funny film for all the family including those that are deaf or hard of hearing and for that reason I have given it 4 stars. It won't win any oscars, but it is funny. There are times when you don't want a complicated story line to follow with ridiculous stunts or utter stupidity in place of good humour. This is a gentle, delightful comedy with universal appeal. If you want something more weighty this is probably not for you.
