Product Description

Box set of films starring the American comedian. In 'Uncle Buck' (1989), Candy plays the jobless, happy-go-lucky slob of an uncle who is asked to babysit his niece and nephew (Gaby Hoffman and Macaulay Culkin) at short notice. His hidden flair for childcare soon emerges, even as his relationship with long-suffering girlfriend Chanice (Amy Madigan) takes a turn for the worse. John 'Home Alone' Hughes directs. In 'The Great Outdoors' (1988), Chet (Candy) is a family man whose summer vacation is ruined when his overbearing brother-in-law, Roman (Dan Aykroyd), invites himself along with his family. The rivalry between the two is based on Roman's so-called success and Chet's feelings of inadequacy, but all is not as it seems. In 'Brewster's Millions' (1985), Richard Pryor plays a man who stands to inherit $300 million - if he can first spend $30 million in 30 days without letting anyone in on the reason. This proves harder than he'd imagined, even with the assistance of team-mate Spike (Candy). In 'Going Berserk' (1983), limousine driver John Bourgignon (Candy) is engaged to Congressman's daughter Nancy Reese (Ally Mills). With her father, Ed, running for President, and determined to rid the country of cult leader Sun Yi, John's marriage preparations soon begin to take a turn for the worse. Finally, in 'The Blues Brothers' (1980), brothers Jake and Elwood (John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd) have sold their souls to rhythm'n'blues, but still lend a hand when the church orphanage in which they were raised is threatened with closure. Resolving to get their old band together and stage a fund-raising gig, the brothers have God on their side but everyone else against them - and that includes a bunch of Country and Western rednecks, an angry chapter of neo-Nazi thugs, the massed ranks of the Chicago police force, and Jake's psychotic ex-girlfriend Camille (Carrie Fisher).

How can i put this. John candy is comedy GOLD! Better even he's platinum coated in bacon! That sounds weird but it suits him.
Anyone who is a fan of Candy or has heard of him should buy this set. My only gripe is it should also include planrs trains and automobiles to truly be his greatest hits instead of going berserk.
But a great collection anyway, including:
Uncle buck (his best and my favourite!!)
Great outdoors ( with Dan aykroyd as his brother in law)
Blues brothers ( only a small role but very well done. Dan aykroyds finest film!)
Brewsters millions ( Richard pryors side kick, very funny)
Going berserk (An average comedy Candy does what he can but Eugene Levy steals the film with his performance!)

Overall a great set the only weakness being going berserk. One of his lesser films but can be forgiven considering the other great films included.

John Candy seems to fall into the 'Marmite' category. Luckily we love Marmite. We were both feeling a bit low recently and put on a couple of these films. If you love him, the blues don't last for long in his company. The price is terrific and meant we could create a bit of space by removing videos from our shelves. Buy it and have a really good laugh.

This is a review of the Region 2, 2007 edition of the DVD "John Candy Collection", not the movies themselves.

"Uncle Buck" and "The Blues Brothers" are presented in decent anamorphic transfers.

"Going Berserk" is anamorphic but the picture's a bit grainy, and lip-synching is out in places but this could well be the original movie.

"Brewster's Millions" is non-anamorphic 4:3 full-frame, pan-and-scan. That means on a standard TV it fills the screen, whilst on a widescreen TV you get black bars left and right where the rest of the picture should be. To be fair to the publishers here, the back of the collection box is correctly labelled. At the time of writing, there's never been an anamorphic release of this movie outside Region 1 America so that's the version to go for if your equipment is multi-region / NTSC compatible. It's also available as part of the all-anamorphic Region 1 "Richard Pryor 4-Movie Collection".

Finally, "The Great Outdoors", and what a mess. The back of the collection box says "1.85:1 ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN". Wrong! The back of the individual disc case says "2.35:1 WIDESCREEN". Wrong again! It is in fact non-anamorphic 1.85:1 letterbox. That means on a standard TV you get black bars top and bottom. On a widescreen TV you get a thick black border, left, right, top and bottom, or zoom in for very low definition.

So, if you have a standard TV and have no intention of changing, you may consider this collection good value. For everyone else, perhaps get it for "Uncle Buck", "The Blues Brothers" and "Going Berserk" (ignoring the other two movies) if you think it's cheap enough.

This collection is very odd. While it no doubt contains some great movies, two of them at least barely contain John Candy!

'The Blues Brothers' is a great film, however John Candy has about 1% of the screen time. He's around more in the pretty decent 'Brewster's Millions', but he serves as an occasional sidekick to the main character played by Richard Pryor.

As for the other films: 'Uncle Buck' and 'The Great Outdoors' are both pretty good. Uncle Buck has John Candy as the main draw; it's HIS film. The Great Outdoors sees him share the star spot equally with Dan Aykryod.

'Going Berserk', the final film, doesn't meet up to the standard of the other films; it's very poor, with an awful plot. Like Uncle Buck, John Candy is the focus here.

As a set of films then, it's a reasonable collection. As a set of John Candy films... well, you may be left wondering where movies like 'Who's Harry Crumb?' are.
