Amazon.co.uk Review

Even though there’s an increasing number of horror movies right now, not least ones with characters left open in unfamiliar surroundings (Wolf Creek, Hostel, Vacancy--and plenty more besides), it’s worth making some time in your life for Gone. It’s a small British film, shot in Australia, with a lot more bite than you’d expect it to have.

Here, the lead characters in question are a pair of in-love backpackers, who, while rambling across Australian desert, meet a stranger on their travels. Things, without giving too much away, escalate from there, but thanks to the wise restraint of first-time director Ringan Ledwidge, events in Gone are kept very taut and extremely tense. Eschewing gimmicks and gore, instead the film is very focused, perhaps a little unambitious, but nonetheless highly effective.

Ledwidge’s cast serve him very well, too. Shaun Evans and Amelia Warner are effective as the backpackers, but it’s Scott Mechlowicz stranger you’ll be talking about once Gone’s credits roll. That, and the superb photography, that delivers some wonderful frames from the terrific Australian scenery.

Some may find the relatively slow pace a little troubling, and there isn’t much in the way of surprise in Gone’s locker. But as a small, quietly effective little horror, you won’t feel cheated by it at all. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

While on his way to meet his girlfriend Sophie (Amelia Warner, Aeon Flux), English backpacker Alex (Shaun Evans, The Boys From County Clare) meets a friendly and enigmatic American drifter called Taylor (Scott Mechlowicz, Eurotrip) in Sydney. After a night of heavy drinking, Taylor offers Alex a ride to Byron, where he meets up with Sophie. The couple decide to take Taylor up on his offer of a drive through the Outback. As the journey goes on, Alex becomes more and more suspicious of Taylor and his interest in Sophie. However, Taylor has something in his possession that could threaten Alex and Sophie’s relationship. Former commercials director Ringan Ledwidge makes an impressive and gorgeous looking debut feature film with GONE. The film’s plot combines elements of Wolf Creek, Dead Calm, and Roman Polanski’'s Knife in the Water and Ledwidge expertly controls the tension levels by providing a long and edgy build up to the terror that eventually occurs in this psychological thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gone, but not forgotten, 23 Aug 2007
By S. Hacking (Watford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you're looking for Wolf Creek part 2, forget it, because Wolf Creek it ain't. Ignore all the similarities you may read on here, a la Dead Calm/Wolf Creek, because to do that will not do the film justice.
The film is not trying to be either, in my opinion, but instead you have a very well acted psychological thriller - all 3 characters are believable, (i mean, why wouldn't you trust a handsome young american man?? He's not wielding a chainsaw afterall), and as the film progresses you see doubts raised about this person who is manipulative to say the least.
Take it for what it is, and no more, and you should not be disappointed.
Keep your eyes open for all three of the young actors, Shaun Evans, Amelia Warner and Scott Mechlowicz, as they are all destined for great things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I was expecting, but still good, 17 Nov 2007
I bout this film, simply because I'm a kid, and I dream of one day going to the Australian outback and feeling the experience. 'Gone' seemed like the perfect movie for me, because I love horror as well. In contrast, what I 'experienced' was about 5 minutes of 'outback action', and all the rest was just 3 people driving along, camping out on fields and beaches, and occasionally staying at an odd creepy Motel. Or so it seemed.

Some people have said it needs more "'umph', and more of a story, because all it actually is, is a boring psychological drama with only tiny suggestions of the killers actions; and, for about 70 minutes, the tension builds until a climax comes in which nothing really happens anyway." ... I saw the film in a different light.

Somehow, even though it was virtually the opposite of what I expected, I was still absolutely transfixed all the way through, and thought the climax was suitable and satisfying (if slightly blunt and cringe worthy)

If you watch the film with great intensity, there is a lot more to love than what comes off initially. I suggest that if you own it, watch it again and turn the volume right up, so you hear every word; I promise you the effect will be bettered.

On the other hand, this does admittedly involve some genuinely scary moments, mostly involving phones. Also, it disorientates you, like when the first blonde girl disappears, the characters do not look deep enough into the disappearance. And when the boyfriend just vanishes, his girlfriend just doesn't seem to mind. This is confusing as the sound track and the acting are fantastic.

'Gone' has all the elements to earn itself cult status, it's just not recognized enough to be popular. Unbelievably, too, the sequel is all written up and in for production next October. I don't know how they'll carry on this story faithfully, but we'll see...

2.0 out of 5 stars Gone... to sleep!, 18 Jul 2007
This isn't a terribly bad film, just a very boring one! Anyone expecting a brutal Wolf Creek style film will be greatly disappointed. What we have here is about an hours worth of character development, with the occasional suggestion that one of the characters is most likely a maniac. Pretty straight forward stuff, and you would expect that the last half hour would be action packed with intense, dramatic stuff. Only it isn't. The film never delivers any kind of punch, hardly any violence is shown throughout and the entire film feels like it has been done before, albeit not in this setting. All in all, I wish I'd watched something completely different last night!
