Gottschalk is taking his rightful place in the canon nowadays, after many decades of unwarranted neglect.

An early 1970s edition of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary of Music described his works as "faded". Happily they are now sparkling again. When we consider what the USA has given to the world musically, and when we review the place of Gottschalk in the history of American music-making, we must surely acknowledge him as a highly significant figure in the evolution of music. Much more so perhaps than, for example, Percy Grainger.

This latest Naxos CD is an important addition, as it has some pieces not previously recorded and some newly reconstructed authentic orchestrations. These orchestrations are interesting, and the performances well-recorded.
Some of the singing in the delightful "Escenas Campestres" is perhaps not quite top-notch. But this is a CD that anyone who appreciates Gottschalk must have.
