4.0 out of 5 stars Nice return to form (almost)..some classic lyrics/moments, 9 Aug 2007
By M. B. Wilson "crushtrash" (Bristol) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Cormorant was a fairly laid-back affair, and although great to see the Shrieks (at least 2 of the original line-up, anyway) working together on new vocal material, it didn't seem to be as creative as their heyday (or even the mini-lp Having A Moment from their fanclub).

Glory Bumps is more intense, with several of the tracks having the earthy looped percussion reminiscent of Care/Tench (but not the over synthesised Jam Science). Barry's lyrics (cards are in the digipack, as with Cormorant) are typically dark and humourous at the same time. He loves to use words you wouldn't normally hear on any musical output, and yet they scan perfectly with the music.

"Amarylis" features falsetto lead vocals (like Accretions did), which he hasn't done for quite some time, thus adding extra texture to the album. Some great loops (apparently some lifted from his/Martyn's Monstrance sessions)and quirky electronic textures make this very much a Shriekback album approaching form again. He may sound older but the enthusiasm to take the listener through his thoughts is still very much there. There isn't a bad track here, although a few do sound a bit samey on repeated listens (hence 4 stars - 4.5 would've been fairer).

Packaging is nice digi again, with gold embossed bubbles and lettering - those guys at Malicious Damage like to present releases in a way that makes them more enjoyable to handle and read through than most labels these days.

Some reviews I've seen say it's a return to the energy of "Oil and Gold" - well, almost (but don't expect a slammer like "Nemesis" or "Malaria"). I have eagerly purchased their stuff since the Tench EP and the Shrieks still surprise with their enduring ability to come up with new toons. Hope they continue for many more years to come, based on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shriekback on form, 6 Aug 2007
Hooray - they're back with a bang! This latest Shriekback offering is reminiscent of their old blood, guts and brains sound. As any fan knows, Shriekback were the best "undiscovered" band around in the eighties, producing powerful, energetic, bass-line driven music with clever lyrics and quite a few references to fish.
"Glory Bumps" is a departure from their more recent ambient offerings, and a return to the old energy of before. Barry Andrew's laconic vocals deliver lyrics such as "Armageddon it on/it's a terrible pun but I don't care" and the layers of sound and backing vocals are reminiscent of one of their previous classic albums, "Oil and Gold". Shriekback stalwarts Martyn Barker on drums and Wendy Partridge on backing vocals are joined by ex-XTC cohort Andy Partridge.
As an aside, Barry Andrews' son Finn provides backing vocal on the title track. He is now the singer with a band called The Veils. Now THAT makes me feel old.
