5.0 out of 5 stars Spy - WW1 book by a spy, 8 Feb 2010
By Mr. Geoffrey Scott (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an interesting book which may be fact or fiction. The National Library of Australia catalogues it under Espionage, British - Biography, but Wikipedia says it is a novel. It is about the exploits of one British soldier (with German family ties)to get behind the German lines in the First World War. He succeeds once, gets into the Low Countries, is caught, escapes, and succeeds a second time. This time he takes the place of a German cousin and ends up working in the German High Command. He claims to have influenced the morale of Ludendorff by bursting into tears at a critical moment, and also says he crossed back to his own lines to persuade Haig to make his final big push. The author was a real-life spy in both world wars, a prolific author (that would never be allowed these days), and one of the first writers of UFO fiction. Whether it is true or not, it still gives a good insight into conditions and attitudes in WW1, and there can be no doubt of the author's first-hand knowledge of the topic. Recommended as a ripping yarn either way.
