Amazon.co.uk Review

‘The boy who lived’ is another movie hero whose video game adventures never seem to have matched up to the quality of his films (or books). Rather than simply repeat the predictable third person action of previous games though, this is something a bit different. It’s almost a sort of Grand Theft Auto: Hogwarts (or a variation on The Simpson’s: Hit & Run for those that are too young to know about Rockstar’s naughty blockbusters).

What this means in practical terms is that you’ve got almost the whole of Hogwarts school to explore from the off, with different missions of varying degrees of importance available from different locations. You now control only Harry, with Hermione or Ron reduced to supporting roles, although there are some short sections where you can play as Fred and George Weasley instead. The re-focus on Harry is a result of the sheer number of magical spells available to him now, from standard offensive and defensive magic to summons and levitation spells that help you uncover and unlock the hidden secret of Hogwarts.

Casting spells isn’t as simple as just pressing a button though, as you’re made to actually trace out a magical symbol using the controller (something that works particularly well on the Wii), which adds greatly to the sense of immersion. There’s also a range of similarly controlled mini-games, including wizard chess and gobstones, which you can play either in or out of the game. It’s all a vast improvement on the previous titles, with similarly superior graphics and a general air of effort not usually associated with film tie-ins.

Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
i was a fan of the previous potter games as they were fun to play, then i bought this. i thought the quests would get better but they didnt. i completed in about an hour or so i didnt relise i had come to the end because there is no real ending to it.

If i had the chance again i would not buy this game and am curently wanting to sell it. DO NOT BUY IT. you will be completly disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter OOTP, 4 Sep 2007

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
After the dire HP 4 videogame based on 3 yr old's, i wasnt expecting musch from Harry 1st outing on the PS3, i was wrong it might be a bit stubborn a few times and a bit pepetitve but it's worth 4 stars, why? I'll tell you.
First of all, why didnt i get this on xbox? well not only was i intrigued to see potters first Next gen videogame in Blu ray but this game suits the PS3's control and style very well.
The thing i like about it is that it's a sandbox adventure, a free roaming magic carpet ride, sort of a few bumps and knocks along the way but it gets there in the end.
the story differs a little from the book and film but overall a decent movie andaption and a decent game.
One problem, i would of wanted online play for wizard duels and stuff but you cant have it all can you......:(

3.0 out of 5 stars More for kids, 15 Jul 2007

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Well after reading the reviews of this game, I thought that it may be one of those titles that's suitable for both children and adults. Unfortunately, this isn't really the case. The quests are very simplistic, and progress through the game is fairly quick (even on the harder settings). The quests include such things as rounding up fellow students for a meeting in the Room of Requirement (and there are 28 of them to find!), or completing homework for various teachers.

The handling of the game felt a bit clunky too. Ron and Hermione follow you around Hogwarts at all times, but get extremely annoying when they stand in your way and you have to force them to move. Hermione also gets a little irritating as she regularly reminds you of the quests you haven't completed. And you can't cast a spell on her to make her quiet!

On the upside, the graphics are great! All of the characters look like the actors in the movies. Hogwarts itself is quite stunning to look at. But visuals aside, the game just didn't do it for me. I suspect though that children, who are fans of the films and books, will like it.
