Synopsis

Coming from a French director, Luc Jacquet, the miraculous MARCH OF THE PENGUINS would have to be a love story. And it is, in that it follows the mating rituals of the emperor penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer, after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding, the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking in single file, they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction, moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there, they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate a monogamous match that will last a year, through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time, the mother will birth an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter, which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally, with spring, the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns, while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. The film is remarkable in its story, which is narrated by Morgan Freeman, whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is its photography, which shows the penguins hunting underwater, sliding on the ice, and in the midst of kissing. At one point the camera even zooms inside the mouth of a penguin as it regurgitates for its young. A story of love and more strikingly, survival, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS is any eye-opening and educational experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent touching film but no benefit from HD, 9 Jan 2009
By Mr. M. Kiehn (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews

This is an excellent moving film. Morgan Freeman's naration is excellent adding a real feeling of care and warmth for the penguins. It is highly recommended! The content of the film definitely deserves 4 stars at least and this review should be read in this context.

So why only 3 stars? This is a review of the Blu-ray version of the film. So what is this film like in HD (bearing in mind that this comes at a 200% premium compared the standard definition version March of the Penguins - Luc Jacquet [2005])? The HD adds nothing. At times it seems more like an upscaled DVD. Certainly compared with the same material from Planet Earth on Blu-ray this is very poor. Bearing in mind that this was shown in the cinemas on a large screen this must be a flaw in the conversion. What a let down as it is not hard to see how beautiful this could have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring, 19 Sep 2009
By D. A. Pitan "DavidP" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This unforgettable documentary follows the migration of emperor penguins as they journey to one of the coldest parts of the Earth to reproduce. Then it gets really interesting: the females lay the eggs and transfer them to the males for incubation. The famished females then journey back across the frozen landscape as deepest, darkest winter descends, leaving the males behind. What happens next is simply mind-blowing: the males huddle together for warmth, taking it in turns to stay on the perimeter and remain this way for the whole of the winter months feeding on food consumed before the migration. As the long winter ends, the baby penguins begin to hatch and just as the males and their offspring come to near starvation the females arrive loaded with food for weaning the new borns. Incredibly, partners are able to identify one another and reunite. Morgan Freeman's narrative style, patented in "The Shawshank Redemption", perfectly complementst the visual feast before your eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Year in the life of a penguin, 1 April 2009
By Alex Toth (Blackrock, Co. Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This amazing documentary gives us a close-range insight into a year in the life of a penguin colony in Antarctica. It's very well made and well commented by Morgan Freeman. Even my 2-year old enjoyed it very much.

I'm glad I got it in Blu Ray. The sharpness and level of detail is unmatched.

The making-of documentary is also worth while watching.
