The album is supposed to raise awareness of the human rights crisis in Darfur, also the net proceeds will go to Amnesty International. So, if you believe that you can make a difference by buying/downloading an album or going to a concert, you can buy these CDs. I just downloaded all the 38 songs (the CD only contains 23) and I am very disappointed. Personally, I felt that most songs lacked quality and they were not up to a standard that they could appear on the artists' own albums. It could be still alright but they also lacked charm and fun too. Having heard almost every song from John Lennon before, it is hard not to feel disappointed. Most songs are very safe takes, there is not much of a departure from Lennon's versions.

If there is, they are very similar to the versions on the 1995 Lennon tribute. That album's aim was to establish a dedicated fund to provide "for proactive programs conducting, promoting and furthering spay and neuter efforts for cats and dogs", another noble cause. There were Mary Chapin Carpenter, Red Hot Chili Peppers and interesting side projects with Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver and what a cover!) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), but basically it was a creative (fairly) low-budget thing with bands I've never heard of (but The Flaming Lips is on both). Anyway, at least Steel and Glass is worth getting from this twelve years old cover CD.

This time we have a big-cause-big-budget-big-promotion-low-risk project and there went all the originality and playfulness but came big-big bands like U2, REM, Green Day, Snow Patrol, Black Eyed Peas, Avril Lavigne (!) and Corinne Bailey Rae (?!). Still, it is boring and calculated.
If you want these songs stick with Lennon (the 39 track Working Class Hero is just under nine pounds from Amazon), if you feel strongly about the cause than other ways are available. However, if you want Imagine from two different artist (three in download along with Instant Karma) or just want big names doing something different, then why not to buy it, the barbecue and garden party season is just coming.

If you like the music of John Lennon then you'll absolutely love this album, the arrangements and artists interpretation are first class without straying too far from the original. One of my best album buys for years
