4.0 out of 5 stars Into the next galaxy ?, 16 Nov 2007
By N. E. M. Goulder (Saffron Walden, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This disc is an interesting gathering of four disparate works by the indefatigably complexist composer Brian Ferneyhough. Two of the pieces form distinct chunks of his music drama Shadowtime; the other two, an early Mass (without Credo) and a pair of "Marian Motets" give insight into the (startlingly precocious) early output of this unforgiving imagination.
Unlike Ferneyhough's instrumental writing, where he often commits performers to unbroken movements running twenty minutes or more, the choral efforts here almost always find their way to a close within two or three minutes. The Mass is approachable and while the vocal writing clearly stretches the twelve (almost solo) voices, you often feel Ferneyhough has a strong instinct for drawing fine and new things out of both the sustained and the fleeting qualities of the human voice. The (slightly portentously named) "Doctrine of Similarity" lifts from Berg the idea of writing technically complex forms (here 13 canons) into a music drama context; you may find your ears tinkle with reminiscences of Moses and Aron here and there too. But there's nothing of Berg's orchestral flood - a Webernian spikiness is really the backdrop. The motets are placed third, to my ears not helpfully breaking apart the two Shadowtime excerpts; the disc closes with "Stelae for Failed Time" (another title asserting the composer's hyper-intellectual status), which suffers more than the "Doctrine" in being cut off from its larger-scale context, almost incoherent in the hazy double-layering of its texts.
You can only marvel at the astounding fluency of the vocal efforts here. Odaline de la Martinez and her Lontano group have now achieved thirty years of fine contributions to the modern music scene. This disc, where the BBC singers lead some oustanding technical contributions, is another landmark from them.
I don't feel it fair to close without a comment on the general thorniness of the writing, though. I have written elsewhere (see e.g. review of a CD of chamber music, including the fine String Trio) of the outer-space extremism of Ferneyhough's language. Is this really the way forward ? This disc won't send you to bed happily humming any tunes (although I know a New Zealander who says it goes well with his breakfast!) but it may stretch your thinking about what the music of the future might engage.
