4.0 out of 5 stars good release , 11 Jan 2008
king of the ring 1999 and 2000 are here together in this generously priced double feature which makes for some great viewing.
King of the ring at this stage still featured quarter final matches so you had four of those, two semi finals and a final plus an undercard as well which isnt really an undercard but you know what i mean.
The kotr 99 also featured matches aside from the tournament issue of who would be king included the hardy boyz versus the brood (edge and christian),the undertaker vs the rock for the title and a winner gets control of the company handicap ladder match between stone cold steve austin vs shane and vince mcmahon.
The king of the ring tornament matches werent as poor as some years although they are rushed of course, but this makes for a good contest with pace and precision and all the way through the matches were solid and the winner while being a surprise deserved the award regardless of your opinion on him.
The tag match was very good, the undertaker and the rock always had good matches, this one was no exception, plenty of give and take and action with a frantci crowd turning on the undertaker and giving the rock the push on he needed,a fine match that was refereed in odd style giving it a hardcore rules feel.
The ladder match wasnt an out and out classic but had some great individual moments, the match got lumpy at the end as the men got naturally tired but the outcome was just the ticket and the event doesnt have to shy away in the vast history of pay per views at all.
One year later and we were at it again,7 matches that lead to a king and some seperate matches, this year the main event wasnt as special as some would think but we did get a cracking four corners elimination match for the tag championship between too cool, the most annoying team ever folks!,edge and christian, the hardy boyz and Test and albert.I like this match despite my distain for one of the teams, the king of the ring was great in itself with a winner truly fit for the prize.
The tables and dumpster match handicap match between the dudley boyz and road dogg and xpac with tori also made for some engrossing stuff,a match with plenty of appetite and ambition and the winners had a very good match indeed.
Special tribute must go to the match for the hardcore championship which featured old hands pat patterson and eric briscoe hamming it up in an evening gown match,so basically they fought in drag, this was a good match albeit it silly but i loved it all the same, the commentary from the king and jim ross during this was typically fun and fiesty,a good match and now onto the main event.
It was a six man tag for the wwf championship, the champ was triple h and he had vince and shane mcmahon in his team against three ambitious and title hungry men in the shape of the rock ,the undertaker and kane, the stipulation was that if anyone pinned either shane, vince or hunter that they won the title there and then so teamwork from the rivals went right out the window. This made for good viewing and shoddy viewing in parts, the match had no real flow, mind you i was impressed with shane in this match, the match was filled with stop start pin attempts that gave the match a numbing form but at the same time this was another good event so when i add the review of this along with the 99 review this gets a lovely average of 4 stars,nice..
