operation tim, and friends, in the area!! , 23 May 2007
Now, i hadn't heard about this CD until last week and bought it just to fit in the rack next to The transplants, Lars and the bastards and, of course, Rancid. I wasn't expecting much to be honest and boy was i put in my place. I dont know if it was due to todays weather being warm and sunny but this just hit the spot. Outside, annoying the neighbours with some good old ska and dub. And that's what this is 'old' ska. The production is absolutely spot on and the name of the game is Trojan. Its only 10 songs long, coming in at 33 minutes, which is perfect, the last two Rancid CD's could have done with a bit of quantity editing. This CD is not new, its not groundbreaking and its not exactly up-beat, there is a huge hazy green cloud hanging over this, but it is certainly good fun. Being backed by the Aggrolites has certainly added to the atmosphere of the songs. Of course the spirit of Rancid is evident here but, this is more in tune with Operation Ivy than Californias finest. Its Tim Armstrong solo album, what can i say the mans a genius and he's on a roll. Hell, even his lyrics have an almost optimistic tone to them, he must be in lurv, or at least in lust! This is my sound of the summer. You know, i think i'll go and put on some Lee Perry and kick back. Roll on the return of Rancid! Oh, one complaint, the DVD, that two tone effect on all ten videos gets a bit wearing after a while. It would have been nice to have had a bit of clarity on some of them, when you watch them you will know the ones i mean. Bring on the dancing Punx!

Just buy it... you won't regret it..., 13 Jul 2007
I bought this album and I haven't listened to anything else since.
You know when you hear a track off and album and then buy it and it turns out that the track you heard was the only good one... well that doesn't happen here.
I don't normally write these reviews, but on this occaision I am as I have enjoyed this album so much that I want to recommend it to as many people as possible.
This is a brilliant album. Every track is great. If its sunny, it's just the thing to listen to. If it's grey and miserable out, put it on and it feels like its sunny outside.
This is probably going to be my favorite album of the year. And if you get "Reggae Hit L.A." to go with it you'll have an hour and a half of great music to listen to.
It's ska-tastic.
Order it now!

Roots - Rock - Reggae - Party, 24 Jun 2007
For what seems likes an eternity, the wait for the new Rancid album is becoming increasingly frustrating, particularly since its been five years since Indestructible. But you could forgive Tim Armstrong as for the past half a decade, his name has appeared more and more, whether its with his side project Transplants, writing ground breaking hits for pop star Pink or producing albums for Lars Frederiksen and The B***tards.
So essentially A Poets Life is basically a stop gap collection of songs as a way of saying thank you to the fans, although these tunes had been released on MySpace for a few months, with the added addition of a dvd, there's no harm in buying this cd.
A Poets Life is a fitting tribute to some of the greatest reggae and ska bands of all time, from Desmond Dekker, Toots and The Maytals, The Specials, The Beat and various others are influences on here and Tim proves he can still pen fantastic material and even make a smash hit with Into Action. Elsewhere songs like Wake Up, Hold On, Translator and Among The Dead provide a smooth groove and Cold Blooded is shining example why The Aggrolites are so damn good.
Axl Rose take note, this is how you keep your fans from going insane, this is more than a stop gap collection, this is like a diamond in the rough, repeatable material that never loses its appeal.
Buy it now! :-)
