CD Description

With 2007's Grammy-nominated UNITED WE SWING, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra reinforces its revered reputation by offering up a lively set of salsa tunes. Led by pianist/arranger Oscar Hernandez, the horn-heavy New York City-based ensemble shines on exuberant tracks such as "Llego La Orquesta" and "Sacala Bailar", closing the album with a surprisingly simpactico collaboration with Paul Simon on his slice-of-city-life song, "Late in the Evening".

5.0 out of 5 stars Songlines Magazine Review by Sue Steward, 17 Sep 2007
When pianist Oscar Hernandez launched the Spanish Harlem Orchestra in 2000, live salsa was still buzzing in New York. Seven years later, after a couple of scorching albums including the Grammy winning Across 110th Street, they are almost unique in maintaining a sound forged at the Palladium Dance Hall by the influential 1950s dance orchestras of Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto and Charlie Palmieri. The ghosts of those icons inhabit these 13 perfect tracks, most literally on `En El Tiempo del Palladium', with its Puente-inspired, split-second swing-band arrangements, rhythmic Palmieri-style piano riffs, and Mitch Frohman's trilling Pacheco flute. The percussion section is as faultless as Barretto's, and dominated by the brash brilliance of young timbales star, Luisito Quintero. `Llego el Orchestra' (Here comes the band) proudly announces a feast of snorting, prancing baritone and tenor saxes and Hernandez's gently undulating piano motifs: the track is the centrepiece of the collection and features a delicate and stately danzón. Out front, the prized salseros (vocalists) Marco Bermudez and Willie Torres inject songs with an emotive, Puerto Rican tone which evokes classic 80s Sonora Poncena hits and contrasts with the mature tenor of Ray de la Paz (highlighted on `Que Bonito' and the late-night `Mujer Divina'). The surprise is a version of Paul Simon's gorgeous, Latinised hit, `Late in the Evening', sweet amongst the sensual Spanish choruses. Sublime.
- Sue Steward

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my style, 25 Sep 2009
By C. S. Horler - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Previously I bought across 110 street. I got this (United We Swing) for Christmas earlier in the year, I was hoping for something similar - but although the musicians are in fine form, it really moves in a different direction from the other album I've got. I can't state what your view would be, I'd recommend checking out the previews if you already own a Spanish Harlem Orchestra album.
