The North Sea is the musical output of Brad Rose, boss of Digitalis record label which deals with weird folk/noise/soundscape type stuff. The North Sea fit in exactly with that description.
Then why is this on a sticker on the cd cover?: "Fusing outre folk strumming with simple, classic pop, Rose has rustled up an album of sing-along American classics". I wonder if the author of that accolade has actually listened to this album or they're just taking the piss?

Exquiste Idols is pretty far away from `classic pop' and almost `folk strumming' too. It's backbone is scratchy seemingly lo-fi drones, percussive and atmospheric effects. The guitar doesn't feature as much as one is lead to believe. Rose's vocals only feature on 5 of the 8 tracks and they're so far back in the mix and drenched in effects it hard to decipher any kind of lyrics so there wont be any singing along either. Strange.

Exquisite Idols is a very difficult album, the songs are pretty loose and floaty and the noise tracks are very much exactly that. I've never quite understood noise music. I love drone and atmospheric soundscape kind of stuff but why would you enjoy an entire track worth of unlistenable random effects and scrapings? But I digress...

Most of the tracks are in fact songs with chords and lyrics, as so much music is comprised of these days but this is definitely something different and I'm not sure whether I like it yet. Guitar-wise it's folky yet it has an experimental percussion and keyboard element possibly reminiscent of a more ethereal Captain Beefheart, it's quite hard to describe. It's ostensibly mellow; you'd think the folky chords and stoned vocals would conjour hazy imagery but this weird element takes over and makes the album very hard to listen to and ultimately enjoy. A lot of the musicianship, expecially the percussive elemnts are very sloppy too which is a bit of a put off.

I know I'm dogging this album a bit and being fairly cynical but I've tried to enjoy Exquisite Idols and approached it with an open mind but something about it is blocking me out at the moment. It's not that it's a bad album; a few tracks are seeping their way past the mental barrier, it just simply may not be my cup of tea.
For the very open minded into strange folk tinged "pop?"
