3.0 out of 5 stars It's really, really... average, 17 Jun 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Rise of the Silver Surfer (xbox 360) seems to be an entirely average brawler, with a small amount of effort thrown in to add some simple puzzle elements. The graphics - though Ben (The Thing) looks pretty good - seem very last-generation, probably as a consequence of it being simultaneously developed for a PS2, so if you're fine with playing what is in some ways a PS2 game on your xbox 360 then that should be acceptable.

The game is extremely linear. The formula is pretty much: walk through corridor, open door, panic at the horde of enemies who've already spotted you, fight them off, then either fight a particularly large enemy or do some simple non-combat action. Then enter the next corridor. That kind of thing can be pretty fun, but somehow the game doesn't quite manage to achieve that; as some kind of consolation prize we get some exceedingly bland flying levels. The one saving grace in the fun department is the cool factor of controlling the main characters, though their controls are a little awkward.

The difficulty, on "normal" at least, is pleasantly easy, your team members getting up with, it seems, nothing more than a headache something like a minute after their health hits zero and they go down. In a way, that's a little bit frustrating, as you can spend a fair amount of time in tougher sections trying to take advantage of that gameplay mechanic, ie: hiding.

The voice acting seems consistent with film actors dabbling in non-visual media: somewhat flat and awkward, but with definite effort put in. The characters don't appear to have much of interest to say, though, so that's rather inconsequential.

Overall, I'd recommend that people wanting game of this type go for X-Men Legends I or II (if, and only if, you have an old non-360 xbox! They aren't in the xbox 360 "backwards compatible" list!), or perhaps, if you want the Fantastic Four, Marvel Ultimate Alliance. You wouldn't be wasting your money on this, though - it'll be far from your best purchase, but far from your worst.

1.0 out of 5 stars really, really... lame., 17 July 2007
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
What a lame game. It has everything a game shouldn't have. Real bad aesthetics, unballanced characters (one can play only with "Thing", as it's by far the most powerfull), the worst sound implementation, you name it...
The whole game looks bland, pushed into the shelfs like some sadistic ritual, to mess with comix fans.
A good point though, it's short, very short.
tip: you can play it with one hand, just keep doing the Thing's wave attack...

2.0 out of 5 stars Another poor Movie-tie in!!!, 25 Jun 2007

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

Most games to-movie tie ins tend to be poor rush job's released purely to coincide with the movie (in the knowledge that they'll sell bucketloads regardless of quality). There are a few exceptions (Riddick, Spiderman 2) but most, like the recent POTC 3, Superman returns etc are just shameless.

Unfortunately this is no different an doesnt even boast the voice talent of the film. The presentation is pretty shoddy with just an explaining loading scene leading into the first mission (which incidentally bares no connection to the film). In short this is a poor mans Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, with last-gen graphics, and with some of the most inane fight, hit the swith, fight, hit the switch gamelay available. Its oh so basic, requirng little thought or skill. Theres no variation and it just isnt fun or rewarding. The A.I is also Spectrum level with ure allies wandering about aimlessly and being more of a hinderance than a help, half the time you end up having to sheep herd them to places or try to avoid them as they get in your way. There is some half hearted leveling up to be had (guess that's what makes it also an RPG eg???) and a double team attack to unlock (thought it was fantastic Four, not 2 so why only a 2 double team instead of four???) along with some graphic art to unlock (you wont want to bother) but it's so very weak. I so wanted to like this game however even after 10 minutes i was fed up and finding it repetitive!!!

Pro's:
Some obscure and elsser known baddies from the Marvel universe.
I'm struggling, guess it'd be alright for the under 10's new to this kind of thing

Im not intentionally being unfair to this game, however Marvel Ultimate Alliance had its critics but is infinately superior to this. This game is just so basic that had it been on the PSone it'd have been acceptable , and even then would look miserable compared to FF7. If your looking for a game with the FF and Silver Surfer etc look to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Its bigger, better looking, longer, has lots of unlockables and superior in every way.

Avoid............The film isnt too bad tho and worth a look!!!
