With its provocative title (Zeitgeist, meaning ‘Spirit of the Times’), depiction of a sinking Statue of Liberty in front of a red, glowing sun on the cover, and song-titles like "Doomsday Clock", 7 Shades of Black" and "United States," you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to discern the themes and concerns of the new Smashing Pumpkins record. The first album to be released under the Smashing Pumpkins name since 2000, Zeitgeist is of special interest for those who thought that the Pumpkins game was all but finished. First single "Tarantula" showcases the sound of the new album: a heavy-ish, catchy slice of coruscating rock, it simultaneously harks back to the band’s older, stadium-rock days (see Siamese Dream) while continuing the power pop poses of Corgan’s recent (and now disbanded) Zwan project. While many songs - "7 Shades of Black," "Pomp & Circumstance," the intense, ten minute long "United States" – amply display the band’s vigorous side, tracks like "That’s the Way" offer slower, more lucid moments. There’s nothing here to quite match the glories of yesteryear, but Zeitgeist does profile a band still capable of hitting the spot. --Danny McKenna

Description
Sixth album, and first since they originally split up in 2000 following the release of 'Machina: The Machines Of God', from arguably one of the most important bands of the modern alternative rock era. Despite the lack of founder members James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky in the reformed line-up, chief songwriter Billy Corgan has overcome public cynicism and apathy to blast back with this aggressive, amped-up diatribe against everything that is shallow and wrong in today's culture.Includes the single 'Tarantula'.
