4.0 out of 5 stars Shoe-gazing Loungers, 10 Jun 2008
By D. O'Halloran "Frisky Dirt" (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After listening to Citrus and realising its strengths and weaknesses (see review), and falling in love with the tracks Strings and Red Sea, I was curious to hear their earlier album. I wanted to know if the band were like a number of my favourite bands, teetering on the edge of greatness (e.g. M83), by only producing a smattering of stunning tracks amongst the above average fillers?

This album shows off the band's creativity and individuality in a way that is less 1980s pop derived than Citrus, and possibly hints more at the mix of ideas and possible greatness to come..

It gets kicking with Walk on the Moon which is a beautifully constructed progressive song that highlights Yuki's vocal strength and vulnerability. Usually her voice maintains itself at just an audible level above the music, and can appear too weak and girly for my taste, but like the aforementioned Strings, she finds a vocal groove that really suits the playing of the band.

The album then shifts into more leisurely shoe-gazing waters, with a number of James Hanna vocal and guitar inspired gems. He has an exceptional ability for melodic and tonal swirling of guitar effects.. that beautifully blend with the vocals and keyboards, reminiscent, as many have commented, of My Bloody Valentine, and also The Boo Radleys. For a small band, the sound is 'ginormous' (similar to The Verve) - a real testament to an understanding of guitar FX technology!

If the production could be 'beefed up' for album number 3 (a criticism of Citrus too) and their quota of chart hungry tracks increased further, Asobi Seksu could have bigger fish to fry, than just lounging in shoe-gazing waters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem..., 6 Jun 2007
By Ms. M. Davies "RX Queen" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Asobi Seksu (Audio CD)
The fact that 'Asobi Seksu' translates literally into 'playful sex' should give you a small insight into what you're likely to be getting from this album. Where the first album might have seemed a little too brash in places, nearly everything about 'Citrus' is so accomplished, refined, and downright transcendent that it could very well stand alongside Loveless as a modernized shoegaze staple, bringing exactly the right amount of noise, swirling affects, and sound balance to a record simply drenched in dreamy layers of guitar noise and static. Somehow, Asobi manage to map the uncharted territory where My Bloody Valentine and The Smiths might meet for drinks, whilst maintaining their sugary pop sensibilities. Singer Yuki's breathy sweet nothings in Japanese lie atop guitars and keys that pulse, ebb and build to climaxes that would wear Mogwai out. "It's never felt like this", she croons on 'Walk On The Moon'. And she's not wrong.
