5.0 out of 5 stars Important Works from an Important Composer, 30 Aug 2007
By Nicholas Rees (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Arcangelo Corelli set the tone for many of his later fellow Boroque composers, including JS Bach. While he may be more obscure than Handel and JS Bach he is clearly a composer of great ability.

Corelli's music is perfectly balanced and undeniably elegant. While he is early in the Baorque era (1653 - 1713) his music sounds fresh and accomplished. His best qualities are to the fore in the Sonatas he wrote for Violin and Harpsichord. The fast movements are feisty and dance-like in character while the slower movements include some beautiful minor key adagios.

In many ways this set bears similarity to JS Bachs Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord - arguably some of his finest work. One wonders whether Bach was inspired in part by Corelli. The main difference in approach being the enhanced role that Bach gives to the Harpsichord which plays two simultaneous parts, at times dominating the musical proceedings. Corelli is imaginative in his harpsichord parts too and gets good use from the instrument but it is really the Violin which carries the weight. The keyboard acts more as accompaniment.

I highly recommend this set whcih is well played and produced. You will find Corelli to be amongst the most elegant and eloquent of Composers as well as an important progenitor of the Baroque era.
