Synopsis

PET SHOP BOYS - CUBISM sees the most successful double act in British pop history take to the stage in support of their Grammy-nominated FUNDAMENTAL album. Filmed on November 14th in Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacionale, the boys run through a blistering live set, featuring a selection of their numerous Top 20 hits. Director David Barnard has shot the entire film in high definition, and sound engineer Bob Kraushaar has mixed the audio in 5.1 surround sound for an optimal audiovisual experience. Tracklisting: ‘Psycho Intro’, ‘God Willing/Psychological/Left To My Own Devices’, ‘I’m With Stupid’, ‘Suburbia’, ‘Can You Forgive Her?’, ‘Minimal/Shopping’, ‘Rent’, ‘Dreaming Of The Queen’, ‘Heart’, ‘Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money)/Integral’, ‘Numb’, ‘Se A Vide E (That’s The Way Life Is)/Domino Dancing’, ‘Flamboyant’, ‘Home And Dry’, ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’, ‘West End Girls’, ‘The Sodom And Gomorrah Show’, ‘So Hard/It’s A Sin’, ‘Go West’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 23 May 2007
By Paul Spurgeon (Hull, England) - See all my reviews
When you see a pet shop boys concert, its clear that the songs are just a small part of the package they offer, the pet shop boys have become synonomous with putting on a show for all to see and this DVD ranks as my all time fav. The stage design and idea of using a cube that constantly moves and opens up is genius!

The lighting used givers the feel of a very modern concert, also i have to say as well that the dancers are used excellently and Neil has never sung better in his life than on this DVD - his voice is immaculate.

The songs are very well mixed in, old and new songs alike produce a quite stunning DVD - this is a must buy not just for PSB fans, but for fans who admire and respect style when they see it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fundamental Part of Your Collection , 4 Jun 2007
By IWFIcon - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This concert, filmed in Mexico in November 2006 is very handily close enough to being the Summer 2006 festival gigs, enabling it useful as a tool to remember those great concerts by for anyone who went, yet also has a number of differences in the set list, which means it also offers something new.

I am biased when it comes to the Pet Shop Boys (Britain's greatest pop act of the last 20 years by far don't you know) but if you've any liking of them at all, this is a very worthwhile DVD.

It's not the "spectacle" that Performance is/was (then again, it's not the boring "PSB as a real band" show that was the Release Tour) but it makes up with it by having the best set-list that the PSB have ever done live, taking from 20+ years of hits, with some classic album tracks thrown in for good measure. It also serves up the highlights from the most recent studio album Fundamental.

Throw in the high-definition filming (a vast improvement on the picture quality from the Discovery and Nightlife tour videos/dvd's) and THE best sound quality that I've heard on a live DVD from anybody and you have a wonderful must-have package. Just don't expect much from the Extra's (sardonic and witty the PSB commentary may be, but it's not very informative).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic pop entertainment!, 22 May 2007
By Nickolas Name (Brighton - UK) - See all my reviews
Cubism is the dvd that accompanies the Pet Shop Boys latest tour to promote the album "Fundamental". The album has been widely acclaimed as being a "return to form". The DVD is wonderfully entertaining. The quality is great, both sound and vision are stunning and Neil T. looks and sounds better than ever. It features a cross-section of their material, reaching from West End Girls to quite a few songs from the current release, Fundamental. Highpoints for me are "Minimal" merging into "Shopping", Numb, the tender, acoustic version of "Home and Dry" and my PSB favourite "Flamboyant". The two dancers are very entertaining, being both cool and funny and the additional singers (especially Sylvia Mason-James) add roundness to an outstanding show.
In summary, "Cubism" is my favourite Pet Shop Boys concert recording from the opener "Psychological" right through to "one nil to the arsenal" or as it's better known "Go West".
