By Peter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 14 Mar. 2006
Format: Audio CD
With Nick Lowe producing, Armed Forces turned out to be an album of very catchy tunes, which masks the acerbic tone of the lyrics.
The arrangements are especially great on songs like Busy Bodies, Green Shirt and Big Boys. My favorite track is the lilting ballad Oliver's Army, but every single song has a unique pop appeal.
Costello is amongst the most literate and versatile of rock musicians and especially on this album, the tight writing and clear melodies are prominent, whilst The Attractions must be the best band he ever recorded with.
Of the new tracks, the inclusion of Alison and Tiny Steps was a smart move. Armed Forces is a classic of late 1970s punk rock, but has always been accessible to pop fans and timeless in its melodious appeal.

By D J F TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 7 May 2015
Format: Audio CD
Elvis Costello's third album and the first to give The Attractions billing comes from 1979 and is expertly produced by Nick Lowe who mikes Costello's voice front and centre to deliver lyrics full of menace set to pop friendly backing. Contained early on are the two huge singles "Accidents Will Happen" which opens the album and "Oliver's Army", but there's also the well-known staccato rhythms of "Green Shirt" here too. "Party Girl" which closes the original side 1 is extremely Beatlesque, borrowing the guitar riff from "Sun King", but there are plenty of highlights along the way, not least "Goon Squad" the side 2 opener. Costello spits venom like a Cobra, with sneered delivery masking the iron fist in the velvet glove of The Attractions' backing. Anyone not listening could think these were pleasant tunes, but that was always part of Costello's early albums - deep lyrics surrounded by lush production. Listening in 2015 it still sounds relevant, still catchy - and still displays a master craftsman with an extraordinary turn of phrase.

This record has lost little of it's late seventies' glory. Still a highlight of that era . Well worth the buy.

Despite his previous album This Years Model as being seen as the his finest album, 1979's Armed isn't far off from being labelled as his finest album, it's probably more pop than it's predecessor but it still ranks up they're with his finest albums in terms with the consistency of his lyrics and melodys. While This Years Model had hits like Radio,Radio and Pump it up, Armed Forces can boast Accidents will happen and even Costello's biggest hit in Oliver's Army. But that's not all there are plenty more classics to talk about, like the Baroque-esque Green Shirt a song that easily could've featured on Imperial bedroom because of its harpischord intro, other great songs include Party Girl, and the ABBA esque intro of Goon Squad, this album ranks up their with Costello's best and it will forever be seen as one of the most important albums in the Costello album catalogue.

Key tracks:Accident's will happen,Olivers Army,Goon squad,Two Little hitlers

Also Buy:XTC 'Drums and Wires'

This is still my favourite Costello album. With Nick Lowe producing, Armed Forces turned out to be an album of very catchy tunes which masks the bitter satire of the lyrics. Of the new tracks, the inclusion of Alison, Watching The Detectives and Tiny Steps was a smart move. Armed Forces is classic of late 70s acerbic poprock

Been listening to this on a scratchy old cassette for ages too so, along with 'This years model', I went for it. As good as it ever was. Me Costello at his 'punky' best- brilliant reminds me of my late teens in Berlin and Checkpoint Charlie

I'm giving this four stars and not five because I still have a niggling doubt that the theme is followed through consistently. But I'm being picky. It is a very good Elvis album.
