4.0 out of 5 stars For Wexford it gets personal., 30 Aug 2009

This is the first time I have read not seen Wexford and I enjoyed it. Environmentalists including Mrs Wexford are opposed to a new road. Extremist activists appear to have kidnapped Wexford's wife and others, some of whom are killed. Rendell is a good writer who keeps one's interest right up to the twist at the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but predictable, 7 May 2009
This a nice book. Well written and interesting. I think that what happens in Wexford's life was far more interesting than the mystery itself. It's a bit predictable and not as good as the other Inspector Wexford novels. A Ruth Rendell fan will enjoyed it though and I did.. but I must admit I wouldn't read it twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rage over building a Road, 23 Aug 2001
By A Customer
England just like everywhere else in the first world has to continuously build more motorways and freeways to make sure traffic can get from one place to another. The road builders have come to Kingsmarkham where Chief Inspector Wexford resides and presides. Far be it for a senior police officer to join the ranks of the radical demonstrators and professional agitators but we are left in no doubt that Wexford does not approve of the destruction of countryside around his district. His wife Dora is not so restricted and openly joins the demonstrators. Then during the clearance of the proposed site a body is found so Wexford and Burden become deeply involved. As usual Rendell draws her characters as real people with genuine feelings although they may not all share the same opinions. This is particularly evident in the views of Wexford and Burden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Endeared me absolutely to Chief Inspector Wexford!
I felt as though I had lived all my life in Kingsmarkham on account of Ms. Rendell's vivid descriptions of this English country village and its beautiful surroundings. Read more
