Product Description
Life is going just great for regular girl Amy. Adored by her parents and her golden-boy fiancé, her future looks bright too... until her fiancé suggests they tell each other their darkest secrets... things they have never told anyone. When Amy finally relents and reveals that her pooch was, ahem, a little more than a man s best friend, everything falls apart.

Synopsis
Bobcat Goldthwait, the frantic, shrieking comedian who gained fame in several POLICE ACADEMY films, follows up his debut feature as a writer-director--1992's SHAKES THE CLOWN--with SLEEPING DOGS LIE, a surprisingly tender romantic black comedy. Melinda Page Hamilton gives a terrific lead performance as Amy, a young woman with a deep, dark secret, something very stupid that she did in college. Eight years later, as her relationship with John (Bryce Johnson) intensifies, she considers telling him what she did, as he believes in total honesty. When she finally does, her entire world comes crashing down. Her rather strange mother (a very funny Bonita Friedericy) and hunk of a father (Geoff Pierson) won't speak to her; her drug-addicted loser of a brother, Dougie (Jack Plotnick), revels in her failure and agony; and John is not sure he can spend the rest of his life with someone who has committed such an outrageous act, even if it was a silly mistake that she regrets. Amy, a teacher, finds solace in Ed (Colby French), a co-worker going through his own marital problems, but everyone else has abandoned her. Goldthwait has written and directed a very funny, very poignant film, one that looks seriously at the meaning and importance of truth and honesty--and when it is okay to keep some things to oneself. The supporting cast is excellent, including a wry turn by comedian Brian Posehn as Randy, Dougie's drug-addled dealer, who has a crush on Amy. The soundtrack features 'You Got It' by Roy Orbison, who actually figures prominently in the rather twisted but charming plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puts the comedy back into romantic comedy, 10 April 2007
This film is essentially a romantic comedy - and is just as sweet as any fan of the genre would want it to be, however, it's not the dull, worthless fare which any non-fan (more like myself) would expect. This film is not only a little twisted in it's adult comedy but very realistically played and yes, actually funny - something i didnt expect to find. It's written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait - most familiar for his role as Zed in the Police Academy series but actually a respected stand-up who was highly regarded by still modern-cultural favourties Nirvana, who he was even brought in to open shows for! There are some great turns from actors/actresses you may not be familiar with due to them being from mainly US TV, however the main character you may recall from Desperate Housewives as Sister Mary Bernard. The plot is based around this main character, Amy, revealing a secret from her past, against her better initial judgement, to her fiance, who reacts not as you'd hope but perhaps as you'd expect - and the plot leads on as Amy's life falls dramatically apart (remember it's a rom-com though - not too much doom and gloom!). This is a surprisingly good film and it proves that you dont need a big budget and big names to make a good film - even if its a genre such as the rom-com which seems to rely on at least the latter factor for its continued success.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, 30 Jul 2007

I'd agree with the other reviewer about this film. I would usually avoid romantic comedies, especially American ones, at all costs. But this film had a great story line, not too predictable and very amusing. I'd recommend checking it out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!, 25 Sep 2007
Looking at the cover of this film in the video store i thought it sounded funny. It's not. This film is really bad. Even the brother (who is the only good thing in this film) cant save it.

Thoroughly distasteful, not funny in the least. Almost worth watching to see if there was a positive side which there most definitely wasn't. Utterly cringeworthy.
