"The worlds best DAB radio" as quoted from Stuff Magazine. The Type-R "it just looks gorgeous!" as quoted from The Gadget Show on Channel 5. Style is everywhere in this classic DAB/FM radio from the natural materials genuine leather, real walnut and anodised aluminium, right down to the ink-filled enamel badge. The Type-R is the worlds first to include a touch-sensitive control panel. Simply glide your finger across it's surface to change volume & station settings. Alternatively wave your hand in front of the display and it's unique "Proximity Awareness" technology will detect your hand and increase the brightness accordingly.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully designed radio, 22 Aug 2007
I came across this product after watching a great review on Channel 5's The Gadget Show which I found on YouTube where the panel were really impressed by the Type-R.

In the flesh the Type-R far exceeded my expectations! It comes in a striking red and black gift box which matches the LCD display and controls.

The first thing you notice when you open up the box is how well built it is, thanks to the solid aluminium chassis. The Type-R stands out amongst today's mess of plastic and flimsy cheap radios and you can see it has really been built to last.

Next was the circular detail of the charcoal colour speaker cloth which, along with the chassis added a warm contrast to the walnut side panels.

The Type-R is a touch sensitive radio and you can change station and volume simply by sliding your finger across the top panel controls.

Added to this was a really neat feature that automatically dims the display when it's not in use.

I have used it as a bedside radio and the best part is that when you wave your hand slowly over the top panel, the whole thing lights up again!

Great for reading the time in the dark..

Sound wise the Type-R does not dissapoint with a really rich deep sound produced by the stereo speakers, plus 5 equaliser modes (Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic & Pop) so that you can adjust to your taste. I can even plug my Ipod into it via the Line In.

DAB radio reception was fantastic too and I didn't even have to pull the aerial out to get a good signal from my favourite stations!

Well done to Genus for this top class DAB radio!!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Well-designed DAB/FM Radio, 18 Sep 2007
By GC (Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
The Genus Type-R is a solidly-build table-top radio that is generally well made with some interesting and attractive design touches. The side panels are real wood and the front-facing top and bottom panels are aluminium which give the unit a very solid and sturdy feel. The back-panel has a thin leather coating that to be honest could be a bit neater but isn't visible from the front while the carrying handle is aluminium and wood and has a very neat finish down to the smooth bushings it turns upon.
The most striking feature of the radio is the touch panel on the top which lights up when your hand approaches it so you can see the touch controls. Touch controls are provided for everything except the power button, including waveband (DAB/FM/Aux) selection, station selection, volume, display options, presets and radio settings. This generally works well although selecting a preset (the radio includes 6 DAB + 6 FM) involves more than one touch and could be quicker.
The radio has an aux input for your iPod as well as a headphone socket and a line out socket. Despite what some descriptions I've read say the radio does not have a USB socket through which the software can be upgraded so you're stuck with the version you get. Luckily the software seems to be very stable and my radio hasn't needed to be reset at all yet.
DAB reception seems very sensitive though FM reception can be a bit noisy. This is definitely a DAB radio first with FM as a back-up. FM doesn't have RDS and, more annoyingly, it doesn't have a way of switching to mono to reduce hiss. DAB on the other hand has a good informative display and switching between stations is relatively quick.
Sound quality is worth some discussion. I've read web and magazine reviews that are luke-warm about the sound quality of the Type-R but I disagree and overall I think the Type-R sounds very good for a table top radio. It has a clear sound with a lot of presence so voices carry quite well but there isn't much bass to speak of. The radio can be turned up quite loud without the sound breaking up and it fairs much better than some more complex 'quart-in-a-pint-pot' designs that try to generate huge volumes and huge amounts of bass from small cabinets and themselves can become very music and position-dependent. The Type-R's sound may not be as extended in the bass and treble as some of these competitors but it doesn't buzz or rattle and seems happy playing most music I've tried without problems. It reminds me of the way old Roberts radios used to sound.
You should be aware that the aerial is not removable so you can't connect an external aerial easily. If you're in a bad reception area for DAB and the Type-R can't be placed in a good position for reception you may be a bit stuck. For me though the Type-R picks up DAB stations much better than my last radio and I haven't had any problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adore My New radio, 30 Aug 2007
Taken delivery of my Type R, with its beautiful real walnut wood, and cool aluminium and leather. It sounds great playing digital radio or my Ipod.

Fits beautifully with my classic Charles Eames chair, I think the Type R may also become a design classic also.

Thinking of getting a second to use as an alarm clock in the bedroom
