5.0 out of 5 stars SCOTLAND'S SONGSMITH BROUGHT TO LIFE, 27 Jun 2007
By Jim Brooks (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews

This is an issue of major importance highlighting the work of Scotland's major yet virtually unknown song composer Francis George Scott. Born on 25 January 1880 - Burns Night - he was educated at Edinburgh University and later took a Bachelor of Music degree at Durham University. For some years he taught English, until he was appointed Lecturer in Music at Glasgow's Jordanhill College, retiring over 20 years later. He died in 1958, soon after Glasgow University had conferred on him an honorary Doctorate of Music. While teaching English, one of his pupils was CM Grieve, later to become the poet Hugh McDairmid. It in the 1920s that Scott found his greatest challenge and inspiration in McDairmid's intense, concentrated poetry.

Scott's output numbers some 200 songs, some of which are as fine as anything written in the earlier part of the last century, and this collection makes one hungry to hear more, especially with the near-ideal interpreters on this disc. Pianist Iain Burnside, well known in the UK as a knowledgeable broadcaster and adventurous music programmer gets straight to the heart of these songs - no mean feat and very necessary as only one of them is over 3 minutes long. Scots soprano Lisa Milne is absolutely ideal in this repertoire. She is a natural, vivid communicator who sings off the text, bringing warmth, clarity and humour to her songs. English baritone Roderick Williams isn't quite so idiomatic, especially in the faster songs, but he too projects the text with clarity and beautiful, focussed tone. On my equipment I found that the sound had a very slightly metallic quality which one soon gets used to, but loads of presence and a realistic dynamic range.

The CD comes with copious and illuminating liner notes which as well as being vastly informative make a fair stab at defining this chameleon-like composer. Is he Scotland's Charles Ives? Gerald Finzi? Hugo Wolf? I found this helpful - some may find it distracting. I can only urge you to buy the disc and make up your own mind. Certainly Scott has an uncanny ability to mirror texts from the spiky Hugh McDairmid to the warmth and humanity of Robert Burns, as well as songs in French and German.

This is one of the most fascinating and refreshing song collections in the catalogue, as rewarding and satisfying as any by more established composers. I only hope it will be successful enough to warrant further volumes by the same artists.
