    3.0 out of 5 stars Same ball-park positioning system, 23 May 2007
A neat idea, but not so hot in practice.

This device is intended to allow you to locate all those outdoor photos on a map - in flickr, Google Earth or suchlike. A must-have for all us landscape photographers, or outdoor holiday snappers, you'd think.

The idea is this. The GPS registers your position every 15 seconds. When you get home, you download the log from the device onto your computer, and use the software provided to import the photos you took during your walkabout. It then compares the time recorded for each photo (using the EXIF metadata) with the time in the GPS log, and then updates the EXIF with the (interpolated) lat and long from the log.

The first time I used it, I drove around in my car to get a feel for how useful it would be for locating photos taken all over a city. I was surprised on my return to find that it had managed to locate only a few of my photos. And all wrongly - they were in the same city, and I'd taken a photo in each of the identified spots, but not those photos.

I double-checked the date and time on my camera, and checked that the GPS data was in the correct time zone (you can't do anything more than that). Then I discovered in one of the software menus you could check a box to take account of summer time. By default, the software assumes you don't believe in daylight savings.

I selected daylight savings then tried again, going for a walk around the block. This time most of my photos were reasonably well located, but two of them were mis-located in the back gardens of houses on the other side of the street from where the photo was really taken - an error of 30m or more. Not convincing. And the mapping software does not let you move the photo to the correct location - you'd have to go to Google Earth to do that.

During my walk, the unit spent quite a lot more time hunting for satellites than it did knowing where it was. I was in a suburban area of two-story houses set back from the street, with trees here and there overhanging the sidewalk. I had a clear view of the sky, and was holding the GPS at eye level so my head wasn't obscuring its line of sight to the sky. But it kept losing the plot and plaintively blinking its sad little message: "lost... lost..." before temporarily finding itself again.

In sum, I'd say this thing better than a toy, but not reliable if you want to go back in another season or 10 years later to take a photo from exactly the same place.

3.0 out of 5 stars The US Amazon Site says this works for all brands of camera., 26 Nov 2007
It's strange that Amazon.com say this works with most brands of digital camera, while the UK version of the site say it only works with a few particular Sony cameras. Which site is correct?
