4.0 out of 5 stars Get the CD and DVD pack, 27 April 2007
By A. J. Sturgess "Alan Sturgess" (North Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I imported my CD from Eastgate in Germany and got it with the full DVD performance of 'Madcap'.

As several other reviewers have said, this is a huge departure from TD's usual style and I do have sympathy with those who find the high proportion of vocals to be one step too far. For me, as a fan of TD since the early 70's, I do wish the song-based interpretations of poetry had been rather more varied. Only 'Pontchertrain' stands out as being significantly different. Many of the other melodies have a remarkable similarity but this does allow you to focus on the words and the careful way in which Edgar has developed instrumentation and rhythmic themes around them. It does also give the whole album a greater sense of cohesion - something that TD hasn't always striven for.

On balance, I find this to be a satisfying and interesting development in TD's catalogue, but it is one that you will need to listen to several times before you come to your own conclusion. One thing's for sure - TD certainly aren't standing still and that was something that I thought might be the case after so many re-mixes and 'dream mixes' of previous recordings.

As for the 'Madcap' DVD. I don't think that's included with the version being advertised here on Amazon. It's mostly an arty black and white affair and shows the band apparently recording or running through the whole album. The use of rather bizarre costumes reminded me of 'Blackmore's Night' and their adoption of equally weird medieval garb. Interesting at first but rather unecessary and sad in the end. The music should be able to speak for itself without fancy dress. Compare, say, the rehearsal footage filmed for 'Camel'.

The film of the band playing is passable but marred by arty effects - and the first track can be completely skipped as it consists only of an extended and self-indulgent simulation of the Weirdly-Dressed-Ones wending their way to the studio.

A far better buy for a concert is TD's 2006 DVD which, coincidentally, opens with themes from 'Madcap'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open yourself to possibilities..., 21 April 2007
By Lawrence Poulton "Mysterious Sines" (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was there last night when this was played live at the Astoria and bought the CD not having heard the music at all. Even though I am what may be called a die-hard TD of 30 years I have not always agreed with the various directions that Edgar et al took. TD music and vocals has alway been received dubiously although I for one do like it. But let me jump to their defense. I beg anyone to give this a chance. Give it several listens. DO NOT dismiss it initially. It will grow. TD must be applauded for continuing to try new things after 40 years. This is beautiful music.

One last word. Last night I cried as they played "Shape My Sin". To be touched by music in such a way is rare. Thank you all ladies and gentlemen of TD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new album!, 28 Mar 2007
By Justin (Norfolk, UK) - See all my reviews
Another excellent album from my fave band by a mile. Tangerine Dream always deliver something of interest with each new release. The bands output spans across almost 40 years so the material has changed in style dramatically since the early days of Phaedra and Rubycon in the mid 70's. However, they very nearly always capture a certain something with every album that takes the listener on a new journey. This time with the unusual addition of vocals right the way through the album. Every listen will uncover a new layer or moment you may have missed previously and the tracks have many memorable passages. Still mainly based around electronics but with the inclusion of guitars, flute and percussion there is a varied sound pallete on show. Highly recommended to TD fans who may find the vocals a shock/difficult at first but shouldn't let that put them off. I feel the vocals are integrated more successfully than some previous attempts by the band. Also TD's output deserves a wider audience, one that isn't solely sheltered in the Synth music world as there is much to enjoy for everyone. If you like this, delve into TD's vast back catalogue and find some hidden gems!

5.0 out of 5 stars Far better than I expected
Not being much of a fan of 70's Dream (Ricochet excepted), I was a bit suspicious of this Syd Barrett tribute. Granted it sounds more like 90's Floyd but it is very, very good.
