5.0 out of 5 stars Two Distinctive Norwegian Concertos, 31 Jan 2008
By Mr. S. J. Bonsor "bonsor2" (Horley, Surrey UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a stirring CD of music by a brace of Norwegian composers whose outlook was rather more Germanic than Scandinavian.

I have to confess that I had never heard of Alnaes before hearing this disc, but would certainly be more than willing to try his other works- if recordings were available ( a brief search seems to indicate that, for now, this is pretty much it). The Piano Concerto is a rugged and masculine piece which uses a large orchestra to considerable effect: the forces, though heavy in numbers, never threaten to envelope the soloist, nor are they stodgy or cloying.

There is an air of confidence about the piece which sweeps you up and carries you along. With the hindsight that nearly a century's distance brings, there is a kind of Nordic splendour to the piece, with Wagnerian Gods peeping out from behind the hills.

Speaking of Wagner, there's more than a touch of Hunding about Sinding's concerto too, though Liszt's technique of thematic transformation seems at work here.

Sinding has had a lukewarm press ever since `The Rustle of Spring' eclipsed his larger serious works in popularity, however there have been modern recordings of his Violin Concerto and Symphonies which demonstrate that he was rather more than a one hit classical wonder. I have particularly enjoyed repeated listenings of his first two symphonies, and the Piano Concerto is every bit as vibrant and memorable.

Piers Lane proves a dedicated and muscular advocate of this music, whilst Andrew Litton in his new assignment as principal conductor, provides first rate playing from the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Another fine disc from Hyperion.
