Amazon.co.uk Review

Despite most gamers’ enduring affection for all things piratical a breakdown in the usual laws of licensing (which decrees that any movie with an explosion in it must be turned into a video game) has conspired to make this the first serious attempt to actually adapt the whole of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. To make up for lost time this actually tackles both Dead Man’s Chest and the new movie. In this sense the bloated narrative of the two Pirate sequels leaves just enough plot to stretch out for a single game.

Although you do get to control the other characters occasionally, most of the game is spent in the heavily swaying boots of Captain Jack Sparrow. This is a shame, not because the characters play exactly the same, but because their virtual likenesses are almost scarily realistic. In fact the game’s graphics as a whole are extraordinarily good, showing a level of effort and attention to detail that sadly isn’t really matched by the gameplay.

On a basic level this is exactly the sort of third-person action game you’d expect for a movie tie-in. As such there’s a smattering of very simple Prince of Persia style platforming and lots and lots of sword fighting. The latter actually seems a lot of fun at first, until you realise you’ve really only got one attack button that matters and jabbing that at random is enough to get you through most of the game. There is a separate fighting system for boss encounters, but this also seems to have a rather patronising opinion of the average player’s hand-to-eye co-ordination. Although, if not for the excellent graphics, that makes it no different than most other movie adaptations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Pirates Of The Caribbean Game!, 1 Jun 2007
By Reviewer (UK, Dundee) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Having played the first Pirates Of The Caribbean game and being impressed by graphics but puzzled by the gameplay, and the Legend Of Jack Sparrow which I thought was a brilliant explanation of Sparrow's adventures, this game was no disappointment.
Though it could probably have done with some longer cut-scenes between levels to explain, if you have seen the movies then you'll know exactly what's happening (though sometimes out of sequence to films).
The extra mini-games such as Pirates Dice are amusing and an added extra from the previous game.
I would definitley recommend this is you are a Pirates fan or if you love good action sword-fighting games!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better., 30 May 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The game is thrilling but also a bit quick.
It starts of with dead mans chest which is very good but the storyline about the pirate lords is brought in much to quick. Dead mans chest is very good and then it gets to at worlds end which finishes so quickly that you only realise your in the last film when you are in the locker of Davy Jones! As it is based on a three hour film you would hope for it to be longer than an hour. The character voices could be much better than they are. The graphics are ok but not exactly in much detail. The gameplay itself also drags on a bit as you are doing the same thing over and over again. Apart from these many faults the game is good and pirate pojer is fantastic as is the dice game, shame you can't play them without having to into a level, my advise is get it if you are bored but not a necessity to buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars A review for the PS2 version, 28 May 2007
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is set to be the next big disappointment after Spider-Man 3's poor debut on PS2 (see my review for details). The controls are harder to master than The Legend of Jack Sparrow, but it is truly funny every time when you sidestep an enemy and they fall off a cliff or into a barrel. The 'Jackanisms', which are moments when you are Jack and you have to press the buttons that appear on-screen, are also amusing, although it is frustrating when you fail right near the end and many enemies flood out of nowhere to attack (you only get one attempt). I love the drama in the game, for example fighting people whilst balanced on railings or even masts, swinging on ropes, or blasting fancy swordsmen with your pistol. However, the graphics are truly atrocious, some of it looks 2D at times and Jack, Will and Elizabeth look nothing like their respective actors. It is also very easy to complete, although the last level is tricky with that damn whirlwind! Sometimes it just gets so frustrating, like when you die and you don't know how or you see a cutscene of one of your allies being killed and you're like "How did that happen?". And the cutscenes! Well, there aren't any. The game just goes along, keeping you in the dark as to how everybody got where they did. I advise you to watch the film first, which will hopefully explain most of the fragile plot of the game. Get this only if you are a true fan of Pirates of the Caribbean.
