special stuff , 10 April 2007
when the doors released the soft parade in 1969 it shocked so many of their fans,i know this as i read it,i wasnt born readers,the reason for the shock was the use of trumpets and saxaphones and so forth,it shocked and alienated so many of their fans who lived for their bleak and minimal style,skip forward some 38 years with screamcore legends posion the well and the same thing could well happen,i hope not and in my opinion this is a masterful album.
The band now fuse horns,banjo,mandolin,trumpets,trombones,slide guitar and electric organs along with their fierce riffs and screams,it shouldnt work,it shouldnt be on this album maybe,but it does work and it turns versions into one of the most exciting albums of the year.
The main thing here is the use of imagination within the band,they werent afraid to try something new,album opener 'letter thing' lifts the roof of the building with its frantic pace and all the while a ripping banjo can be heard in the background,it is almost laughable but shivers will leave your spine at a million miles per hour,throughout the album there are slower,more ballad type songs and all of the instruments gel to deliver stunning results,vocalist jeff has always had a vunerable edge to his clean vocals and here he uses them more than on any previous poison the well album and again to great effect.
The track 'riverside' is one of the most memorable that the band have ever recorded,and 'pleading post' is dark and fragile and again stunning,pretty much all here works,and thats a credit to the band,nothing out there really sounds like this now,4.5 out of 5 album,so if i have helped you get this then you can thank me later.

Fantastic!!, 4 Jul 2007
After hearing Letter Thing, I ordered this album immediatly. The whole record is as quality as that track, and it's unlike anything I've heard recently. It actually forces you to pay attention! Great stuff.
