5.0 out of 5 stars A great neglected symphony , 30 May 2007
By Jeffrey Davis "jmd555555" (Sussex UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Arthur Benjamin is generally known as a composer of light music but he also composed a very powerful, moving and undeservedly neglected symphony (1945). Here it is, given a very fine performance conducted by Barry Wordsworth with the LPO. The Symphony very much reflects the time of its composition ("..to mirror the feelings-the despairs and hopes-of the time in which I live.")

Like another recently released masterpiece; Richard Arnell's Symphony 3, Benjamin's Symphony conveys an epic war-time defiance, in a style which should appeal to admirers of Bax, Alwyn, Walton, Moeran and Vaughan Williams (to whom the Symphony is dedicated). The opening (and conclusion) of the Symphony reminded me of Korngold's contemporaneous Symphony and the very original Scherzo is momentarily reminiscent of Mercury, from Holst's Planets Suite, with its fleeting, quicksilver skitting and yet it still manages to convey something ominous and hesitant. The moving slow movement reminded me of Vaughan Williams's Sixth Symphony; both works share an epic, searching, visionary quality, possibly reflecting the uncertainties of the historical period in which they were written (end of World War Two, start of the Cold War). The Symphony ends in triumph.

The Symphony has been recorded before on the Marco Polo label, in an enjoyable but lighter weight performance from 1995 (Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Lyndon-Gee). Wordsworth conveys a darker, more epic quality and the recording is preferable although the Marco Polo issue is also desirable as it includes the moving Ballade for String Orchestra, which is not on the Lyrita CD. Instead the new Lyrita issue includes some highly enjoyable lighter works by Benjamin, including the Cotillon Suite of Dance Tunes from 1938 (rather in the spirit of John Ireland's fine film score for "The Overlanders"), the North American Square Dance Suite (1951)and the Overture to an Italian Comedy (1936). I enjoyed all these works but it is the epic qualities of Benjamin's Symphony which resonates in the mind afterwards. At nearly 77 minutes and including very informative notes by Calum Macdonald, this is an extremely desirable Lyrita CD.

In many ways, this is one of the best of the new Lyrita issues, since it contains a whole sequence of tuneful and melodic pieces, followed by a powerful, brooding and thought-provoking symphony, of great slumbering power. The phoenix-like revival of Arthur Benjamin's Symphony (1945)is a cause for celebration.

If you like this, look out for Cyril Rootham's similarly epic symphony which is due out on Lyrita soon.
