Synopsis

This mostly silent, gay-themed Mexican movie is an artful look at relationships and sex between men, and is filmed in the breathtaking surroundings of the National Autonomous University in Mexico City.

Broken Sky slips between waking and dreaming. With so little in the way of spoken words it is like a silent movie, this is frustrating at first, as it is not the norm and does not spoon-feed us a recognisable formula. Very little happens during the first hour, it is a repetitive fantasy, but this gently builds characters.

The emotional range of the film is restricted as the characters are gagged. There is no reason for this; they are from the same place and speak the same language.

It is somewhere between a film and photographs, so is not completely revealing. The cinematography is sensitive and subtle, with moments of beauty, it makes me think of Edward Hopper and Cindy Sherman. The soundtrack stood out, employing opera flowing into strings then techno. And being gay is not an issue in the world depicted here.

This film does a wonderful job of portraying the utter joy and utter heartache that can exist when you're in love.

The actors speak rarely, but still manage to convey their feelings and thoughts via actions and body language. I felt the actors in this film were really very good at getting across how their characters were feeling.

This film was very enjoyable to watch, it is unusual and beautifully shot, Why not give it try!

The story is a familiar one ...yet told in such an UNconventional manner .There are many moments which are pure bliss . How well the emotions are conveyed to the spectator through the use of beautiful images , color ,many close ups and the camera moving along with the caracters which give a sense of intimacy .One feels for the characters ,one isnt just a distant spectator ,Longing ,love ,rejection.solitude, togetherness.Perhaps some 15 to 20 minutes too long ...but thats the directors artistic freedom ! Dialogs are few but ,perhaps unecessary when gestures or just a gaze can be as comunicative . The MUSIC for fans of this film ...include Volovan ,Ely Guerra and legendary romantic mexican Jose Jose .
