Music from the Mann, 18 Jul 2007
Writer/Producer/Director and soundtrack virtuoso, Michael Mann, here presents us with a self compiled double CD of
songs and score pieces used in his films throughout his career. Like most of his film scores and soundtracks, Mann puts together
an eclectic selection, including material from the likes of Miles Davis, Del Shannon and Aretha Franklin to the dance beats of Massive Attack and House of Pain.
Naturally it makes for an interesting listen, which of course, fans of Mann and his soundtracks will certainly enjoy.
The inclusion of tracks from his TV work is a nice touch, such as the mentioned Del Shannon with the hit "Runaway" and Jan Hammer's
80's synth-heavy theme from the original "Miami Vice" series. The most appealing aspect of this collection is the inclusion
of tracks from the rare and much sought-after 'Manhunter' soundtrack, including a cut of the memorable "In-A-Gadd-Da-Vida".
Also represented here is the full version of Clannad's "I Wil Find You" from the excellent 'Last of the Mohicans' as well as some cues
from 'The Insider', 'Ali', 'Collateral' and his latest project - the updated feature film remake of'Miami Vice'. His landmark film 'Heat' is also
well represented with seven tracks, some of which were not included in the official soundtrack album release.
Die-hard fans however, perhaps may grumble at some of the song selections and the odd omission of any of Tangerine Dream's material
from his earlier film works, such as 'Thief' and 'The Keep' - but for the average cohort of film music, there is plenty here worth having.
PS - to the reviewer below who pointed out that CD1 only contains 13 tracks, the copy I listened to, only had 13 tracks also.
Whether this may be a listing error or just the UK edition is uncertain.

This is good, very good., 3 Mar 2007
As a big fan of Mann's movies and owning most of the Soundtracks already I was unsure about getting this but at least half was not in my collection.
There are tracks from "Manhunter' which was never released on CD and tracks from 'Heat' that didn't make it onto the OST release.
The order whilst not chronological works well and this is well worth a purchase for those new to the musical cues of Mann and worth it for fans for the 'Manhunter' tracks and some of the unreleased tracks.
Although I seem to be missing track 14 on Disc 1 of my copy.

I like, 7 Feb 2009
This is a fantastic musical overview of director Michael Mann's illustrious career since the early 1980's. Both cds contain 28 fantastic tunes from films like Crime Story (TV) and all his great movies which includes cuts from Del Shannon, Moby, Massive Attack, Calexico, Iron Butterfly, Nina Simone, Brian Eno, House of Pain, and Groove Armada amongst others.
Clannad's album "Banba" is probably most famous for "I Will Find You" that became the theme to Mann's brilliant 'Last of the Mohicians'. If so, it's a real pity, because the surrounding material in that album is just as good, if not better, than the movie title. The song 'I will find you' is notably absent from the cd soundtrack of said movie, so obviously it is a welcome addition to this fine M.Michael collection.
I was pleased to learn that four tracks from Manhunter are pesent on the first cd. "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" plays during the film's denouement, seamlessly synchronised with the antagonist's final ritual of evil and his ultimate downfall. Once you've seen the movie, its images are forever etched to this immortal rock standard. Although both stand as consummate works of art, it's impossible to separate the soundtrack from the actual film because of the insular scope of Michael Mann's visionary visuals and tense tunes.
