An excellent Michael Caine film finally gets released on DVD, 25 July 2009
Silver Bears is one of my Favourite Michael Caine films. It's not very well known but it's very enoyable. The basic plot (without giving away anything) envolves Doc (played my Caine) who works for a mafia hood Fiore(superbly played my Martin Balsam)who wants to buy a bank to hide his money. Things seem to go ok until Doc is asked to invest in a silver mine - this is when his troubles really begin.
The cast is excellent and there are some fine actors in this film including Louis Jourdan (Octopussy), David Warner (The Omen), Cybil Shepherd (Moonlighting) and Charles Grey (Diamonds Are Forever). This is a witty and enjoyable film with an excellent music score by Claude Bolling and superbly directed by Ivan Passer.
The dvd packaging is pritty dull - a nice reproduction of the original poster would have been nice. There are no special features which is dissapointing but the print is excellent with good sound and picture quality. The film is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio which makes a nice change from the awfull pan and scan tv print I originally watched. If you want a light hearted and enjoyable film then Silver Bears is for you.

Every cloud has a ............, 15 July 2008
This movie's got a bit of a multiple character disorder, Is it a black comedy?, is it a crime caper?, is it a Rom Com?, I think it dips it toe into all of these waters, and well enough for you to give this excellent but slightly confused movie a look.
Michael Caine works for the Mob in Las Vegas, he comes up with a great plan to launder their money by buying there own Swiss Bank, easier said than done?, well Michaels got a contact, a Italian prince in the form of Louis Jourdan, There's a pizza Parlour and a Silver Mine involved and several other confusing plot twists but it all trots along at a reasonable pace, add to the mix a bit of female interest in the form of Cybill Shepherd, a frighteningly young Jay Leno, the excellent sinister characters of Charles Gray and Joss Ackland, and you've got a highly entertaining light hearted Black Crime Rom Com. My only criticism is that it can be a little slow at time's and there's too little of Michael and Cybill together as they really seem to spark.

Michael Caine made some excellent films, 6 Feb 2010
He also made one or two absolute stinkers. This film is neither, but it could have been one of the greats. It has a good plot involving mafia money-laundering, with enough twists to keep you guessing and watching. The casting is good, Louis Jourdan is suitably urbane, Joss Ackland and (to a lesser extent) Charles Grey add menace, Cybill Shepherd isn't too fluffy and as always Michael Caine controls the screen.
Unfortunately this film didn't quite work for me, I watched but didn't get involved. I think it could have done with some firmer direction, as it is the film is ultimately confused and incomplete. The characters' motivations are explored, but not fully. It changes pace, some bits keep you glued to your seat while others make you wonder if it is a good time to go make a cup of tea. I normally like changes of pace in a film, if the slower sections are used to add depth.
Overall I feel this was a missed opportunity to make a really good film. It is very cheap to buy, however, so is good value for money. Watch it if you like Michael Caine, it isn't a bad film and it has some funny moments, but it isn't a four or five star film either.
