Synopsis

Robert Bresson's landmark character study of one man's crisis of faith in THE DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST vaulted him into the front rank of French filmmakers. The film follows a young priest as he deals with various seemingly insurmountable difficulties: the tangled animosities of the people in his parish, his own inability to find solace in prayer, and a growing suspicion that the illness he's experiencing might indeed be fatal. An older priest offers him down-to-earth advice about distancing himself from the personal lives of the villagers, but the young priest feels compelled to help them, even if his devoted efforts could well be hastening his own death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and moving, 10 Mar 2009
By W. Hamilton (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bressons ekes out of his sparse material a deeply moving story of faith and loneliness. It is a completely original film in that the performances come about before one's eyes but seem to have no celluoid permanence, and on next viewing will reveal new and different motivations and nuances. The sufferings and yearnings of the characters are real and powerful enough, but mainly as a result of Bresson's ability to get us, the audience, to project our feelings upon the drama, investing the minimal action with rapidity and purposefulness, and so propel it to its destination. The film is one of several that, to my mind, establishes this director among that handful of all-time greats.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, 29 Jun 2009
I've read rather a lot about the work of Bresson over the years and this film in particular. My expectations couldn't have been much higher. How disappointing for me.

Now, please don't get me wrong; I understand and normally enjoy all art house fare as I generally much prefer foreign movies to anything Hollywood has ever produced BUT, contrary to what you might have read elsewhere, this film is NOT remotely moving or involving. I couldn't keep my eyes from the clock, waiting as I was patiently minute by minute for this slow crawl of a movie to come to its final dead end.

I appreciate Bresson was not in the business of entertaining cinema goers in the usual sense of the word and I've read that he himself couldn't make it through other peoples work for the past 4 decades of his life. You have to laugh at the bare faced conceit here. We're expected to sit through over-hyped dry material like this (which makes it point within the first 5 minutes and then proceeds to sledge hammer the same point home to the audience for the next 2 hours) while the director considers himself to be too lofty to have to sit through anyone elses purile rubbish. Why shouldn't he have been made to suffer like we now have to?

I so really wanted to like this film too. I never expected action or a great mysterious story but I was hoping for a sense of awe and inspiration from a beautifully constructed moving tale.

I never expected true "transcendence" as a number of critics described their own experiences after watching this film and I would have gladly settled for a whole lot less. However, I was still gravely disappointed and can't help but wonder if 99 out of 100 thinking people won't also be too.
