Matthew Ryan has a brother in prison serving a 30 year term and among the dedications on the album sleeve is one to 'the everlasting influence and memory of a friend I'll call: her.' He then adds a one line quote to the sleeve notes from Springsteen's Atlantic City - 'Maybe everything that dies someday comes back.' All of which makes the listener suspect that this chap might just have a few issues to deal with. And he deals with them in wonderful fashion - the styles vary with nods to Tom Waits, Springsteen and Arcade Fire among others, and my favourite track is Babybird. He's been around for some time now but this is my first listen. If you like Americana with touches of melancholia, anger, tenderness, guitars, strings and just a touch of Wall of Sound, this is for you.
