3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 4 Sep 2007

This review is from: Tongues (Audio CD)
As a big fan of the Exchange Sessions CDs, I was very much looking forward to this release. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations.

On Tongues Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid have changed their format considerably; gone are the extended improvisations, and they are replaced with shorter, and to my ear, much more planned and rehearsed pieces. Also Steve's signature polyrhythmic drumming seems to barely be used, in favour of a simple 4/4 beat in many of the tracks. It seems as if they have tried to make their music more accessible and appeal to a wider audience. I wouldn't have a problem with this, but in doing so they seem to have taken away just about everything that made the first two albums so good in my opinion! Most disappointingly, the shorter tracks have removed any potential for massive build ups in intensity, such as on Electricity and drum will change your mind from the Exchange Sessions Volume 1 cd.

With time my feelings towards this album have changed, although not significantly. It stands out as hugely experimental in a time when most new bands are making incredibly safe (and in my opinion, boring) music. Some of the tracks stand out as being very good, including their interpretation of the traditional tune Greensleeves, even if it is more of a "clever" track than one that is necessarily enjoyable to listen to.

This isn't a bad album; it's certainly worth owning if you are a fan, but these guys have shown that they are capable of making far better music, and in that respect this album is a big let down.
