4.0 out of 5 stars It's magic, 6 April 2007

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Evidently Portugal The Man is NOT satisfied with just being the creators of lush, smashy indie-rock. Thankfully. Because the result is the swirlingly, bizarrely pretty EP "It's Complicated Being A Wizard," where they throw all catchiness out the window in favor of psychedelic wizardry.

The title track is about twenty-three minutes long -- fuzzy, staggeringly murky and elusively pretty. "We will only take one/and then backs and racks can carry out/of here/someday we'll find a home," John Baldwin Gourley croons under slow, drifting melodies and a heavy layer of fuzz.

He follows it up with a song so short that it doesn't even clock in at a minute. Each of the songs that follows is named after a gem or metal magic, like "Amber Magic" or "Gold Magic." But the music is less predictable: sleepy stoner psychedelica, elusive fuzzy ballads, twittery little guitar pop songs, ghostly sputtery experimental techno, and all sorts of crazy hybrid sounds.

I'm not even sure why this is an EP, instead of a regular album -- it has plenty of songs, and some of them are definitely long enough. But whatever this peculiar band's reasoning, it's a massive experimental step for them, and while it takes awhile to get warmed up to it, the EP is wonderful listening.

There's enough fuzz here for two Elephant 6 albums, laced with ghostly synth and skittering glitches, and all of it placed over grinding bass and some ringing electric guitars. The songs are dense little packages of sonic experimentation, with meandering melodies, although there is the occasional exception like the sparer, quieter "Amethyst Music."

Gourley's voice is pretty unique, but you can hardly hear it as is in this album -- he tries out creepy falsetto, a ghostly lament, a mournful indie-rock monologue, and all sorts of other vocal styles. He sounds the most "normal" in the finale, "Black Magic," where he croons strange lyrics behind a spiderweb of synth and slow-moving bass.

"It's Complicated Being A Wizard" is the weirdest thing Portugal the Man have done to date -- it sounds like a soundtrack from a fantasy movie by David Lynch. And I for one wouldn't complain if they continued exploring this sound.
