Very good, but doesn't do what it says on the tin, 8 Dec 2007
Let's start with the good points, great sound, feels well build, great features and (subjectively) looks good. Did I mentioned it sounds great with my Q-Acoustics 1020i speakers? Absolutely highly recommended...
So how come only 3 stars, well very simply it does not do what it says on the tin. I connected it up via HDMI to my Pioneer PDP-435XDE and the moment the camera pans, the picture tears in a terrible way. It actually made me physically ill watching it. Image is great on Scart (RGB) and Component, but HDMI just cannot be used. I tried all settings 480p/60, 576p/50, 720p/60, 720p/50, 1080i/60, 1080i/50 and all the same. But applying the region hack I was able to spin R1 discs and they are fine...It only happens on R2 discs so those intended for Europe where I bought it!!!
Now it could be faulty, and since I liked it so much I tried another unit exactly the same happened. I spoke to the manager in Richersounds where I bought my replacement for the Teac as they sell them as well, and he said that HDMI is not good on those units.....
Got to say if it was £100 less I would have kept it as I really liked it otherwise and are not that bothered about upscaling since my plasma does that as well. However when I pay for something I like all functions to work....
So be warned, don't by this for HDMI upscaling as you may get disappointed, only the second time around I actually noticed the the manual acknowledges artefacts may happen (p42) and suggests to use an SDTV output instead! (Unbelievable)....
Sorry Teac, nice try but you didn't quite reach the finishing line

A MUST HAVE., 7 Jan 2008
I have owned this unit for six months now & I must say that despite its flaws I love this unit. Like one of the previous reviewers said it looks & feels like a quality build. Before I go any further I must say I am using the unit with some excellent speakers and sub (B&W CDM2 & AS1 Cost £625), so I feel I am getting the best of the unit audio wise. TV is a Samsung le37r88 (£600ish).
I will start with the flaws.
Remote, I opened the box and boy was I disappointed, it does everything it needs to but it just doesn't feel good to hold, buttons are not well layed out and are small. This does not cause me any concerns now as I now use a universal remote.
Upscaler, don't buy this unit for the up scaling feature, if you already have a high definition TV this will take whatever signal you feed into it and convert to its own native resolution. I found that if I used the upscale feature I noticed a drop in picture quality not an improvement. I use the HDMI connection and I leave this at the default setting. That said I must say that I am more than happy with the picture quality, I feel no urge to purchase blu ray or HD DVD yet. I do beg to differ with the other reviewer saying poor quality HDMI, the instruction does state they may be some "artifacts" but I can hoestly say I have not noticed any.
2.1 Audio, this for is the biggest disappointment. To get a cinema sound you still need an AV amp.
The good points. Sound quality, this is where this unit excels it is superb I simply can not praise it enough at this price point. My previous amp was Arcam Alpha 9 (£450) and while the Teac it not as loud it sounds so much more involving, it is a pleasure to listen to.
USB Socket, I don't use my cd`s anymore. I have a 40Gb Hard drive with 28Gb of music which is about 400 cd`s plugged into the USB socket. When you first switch it on it takes about 3 minutes to read the drive (which must be FAT32 formatted) but once it has done this you have full access to your music collection using the on screen display. This is so useful. The USB socket will also read jpegs & DIVX & XVID video files.
Buy this unit and it will be the centre of your home entertainment package, but to get the most out of it buy a decent universal remote & some sort of external storage for your music pictures and videos.
Well done Teac I just hope they replace this unit with one that has 5.1 audio or better.

Good but flawed, 11 Jan 2008
I'll be brief.
Build quality - excellent.
Inputs: poor, there is only one set of audio in (which I use for my phono deck) but that leaves nothing for an ipod dock unless you use the front panel mini-jack plug.
SCART output: excellent
HDMI output: absolutely dreadful, tearing effect on all settings. Totally unwatchable.
DAB tuner: mostly good, some short signal droputs noticeable (I live in an excellent reception area near Crystal Palace, and do not notice these dropouts on other DAB receivers).
HiFi output: superb.
I am using a Toshiba C373030D TV, and a pair of tiny but effective Tangent Evo speakers.
Other issues: frequent audio/video synching issues (but I am not convinced this is the TEAC, it may be the TV) and a loud clicking noise when playing home-made CDs or DVDs.
overall: It's mainly good, it's small and it's attractive but it has many flaws and I am considering taking mine back.
