This has to be one of the best Verdi Operas, though not often played, it should be up there with Otello as one of his most passionate and fiery of works. The DVD transfer of this production is exemplary, and the Viennese audience is so well behaved, that you almost forget it was recorded live. The sound quality is first rate and the cast excellent. In particular Thomas Hampson in the title role and Cristina Gallardo-Domas is equally impressive as Maria/Amelia. The big scenes are very impressive and the orchestra and conductor keep the momentum and suspense going very effectively. If you like Verdi, you should buy this!
