Stylish production of Strauss' most difficult opera, 24 Jun 2007
Die Frau is probably the most difficult of Strauss operas to stage - and yet one of the most rewarding - complex scene changes and magical spectacles, tied with vocal writing that pushes even the finest voices to their very limits. Sawallish rallies some very fine singers here, who all give incredibly strong performances, particularly Peter Seiffert and Luana da Vol as the Emperor and Empress, and Janis Martin as Barak's Wife and Marjana Lipovsek as the Nurse. The Bavarian orchestra play well under Swallisch's experienced guidance, and musically the whole performance is very satisfying (despite the cuts).
The production was entrusted to a team of Japanese directors and designers, who draw on the Kabuki heritage for the ethereal fairy tale characters, contrasting with more human peasant costumes for the earthlings. The straightforward staging works well on the whole, with the magical feats treated simply and stylishly. The only thing that fails in my opinion is the Falcon, which simply looks like a fat man flapping his arms in a chicken costume, and jars rather on the eye!
Overall a very effective and worthwhile addition to the collection; this opera is rarely staged, so a chance to see a performance with such strong vocal and production standards is welcomed.
