although it's true that this album is very different from, for example, modest mouse's breakthrough album "the lonesome crowded west", change is not always a bad thing!

their sound is much more mainstream, and while it is clearly a progression from their last album, "good news for people who love bad news", these songs are much more lush and loud. the addition of the smiths' former guitarist johnny marr has made them more rhythm or perhaps melody-orientated, and while this is definitely a new sound for the band, i personally think it is no worse than any previous albums, and better than some.

this album is definitely a way into modest mouse's undeniably fantastic music: their earlier albums, while gorgeous, could take a little bit of getting into. hopefully, this album will both keep old fans happy and introduce new fans. basically, i love it.

Only heard this a couple of nights ago on the radio. Thought, nice funk riff, clipped drums: Modest Mouse are getting with the program. The program being to adopt the sound of now, you know Talking Headsy, new wave indie punk funk. There was a lot of customary Brock shouting and spluttering and i'm pretty sure a decent tune buried in there somewhere. But what's this? I open my favourite national newspaper's music supplement today to discover Johnny Marr has joined Modest Mouse. Yes, he of the chiming, cycling AMAZING riffs. Yes he of The Smiths!! Didn't see that coming.
