Product Description

CD Description

The fourteenth studio album from Buckingham based prog rockers Marillion sees the band once again take a musical changein direction, choosing to produce a more song based, minimal record than many of its predecessors. The result of this is that 'Something Else' is Marillion's most accessible effort to date, an album full of understated, melodic gems which showcase the band's ability to develop and diversify whilst retaining their trademark sound. Includes the single 'Thank You Whoever You Are.'

5.0 out of 5 stars what a band, 25 May 2007
By Ramses "Alexandria's Library" (Egypt) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I am an old school Marillion fan and dropped out soon after Fish left quite some time ago because I really did not like Hogarth's voice and the direction all this was taking. But recently Marillion came in my small home town on their 2007 tour and I thought "what the hell let's go see them". And I was shocked into amazement: the band still displays outstanding musicianship and cohesion; but Hogarth really surprised me as a good showman, very friendly with the crowd, beautiful vocals.
So yes it is my fault at playing the ostrich all these years but now I discover all the great songs they have been making all this time, and I am rushing to catch up with all I have missed. Including the last album, this contains a lot of great stuff, beautiful melodies and solos, fast and slow, long ans short. Well now that I am reconciled with Hogarth I can say that Marillion has remained a top band with unique chemistry among marvellous musicians, with a catalysing singer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great album from a great British band., 15 May 2007
I didn't get this album first time I listened to it and would have, like one reviewer, given it 1 or 2 stars. Then I listened to it properly. I've realised that you have to listen to Marillion; you can't merely stick the CD on in the background while you finish paperwork or tidy the house! But that's what separates this outstanding band from much of the music (muzak) you can readily hear on the radio and TV which is catchy but is (in Marillion's own words) 'here today, gone this afternoon'. This is music that demands (and deserves) to be listened to. Because Marillion are artists in the true sense and push boundaries, you probably won't love every track, but those you do like will touch you on a deep level, whether through the thoughtful lyrics or (and this is what gets me every time with Marillion)the amazing 'soundscapes' they create, in particular the guitar work of Steve Rothery which is, as always, totally beautiful. My favourite tracks are The Other Half (beautiful guitar solo) and, in particular, the title track which builds from a gentle opening to a rock finale, a track that could be Marillion's Stairway... and if it was recorded by some 'trendy' band would be lauded as one of the greatest songs of the last decade. For me, this album is not quite as good as Marbles, Clutching at Straws, Afraid of Sunlight or the 'out-of-this-world' Brave album but brilliant non the less.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoy it ...like going to an unknown destination on a vacation ., 25 Jul 2007

(REAL NAME)
Well how about then forgetting about "comparing" and "evaluating" and let yourself enjoy this "ride" . I am not saying it is their best offering but every Marillion album ( until now ) has proven to be unique and has its own charm ...and "Somewhere Else" has definetely it's place .
Find yourself a good view : on a balcony while the sky is still blue at the end of the day and let it play ...let yourself go away ; somewhere else .
