4.0 out of 5 stars I was looking for another Pillars of the Earth..., 14 Jun 2004
By Mosschops "DM" (Nottingham) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Place Called Freedom (Paperback)
....but didn't find one. I agree with the other reviews that this is a truely captivating book, excellent characters and a very interesting insight into white slavery of all things!

However I felt that the thought that had gone into the storylines could have gone better - there is one particular abrupt change of direction.

Unlike Eva from Norway, I loved Pillars of the Earth, which I rate as one of the best three books I have read (approximately - I couldn't name the other two) and I like the detailed rambling styles as found in Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) books.

However, I would still recommend this as a entertaining read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finished already?, 24 May 2004
This review is from: A Place Called Freedom (Paperback)
I can't believe how fast I finished this novel! It's really captivating. It has a simple basic plot; something outrageously unfair happening and the oppressed working towards getting his revenge. Good guys and bad guys. Simple, but it really works. I also enjoy the detailing level. Nothing seems to be superfluous, yet you get a clear picture of things.

Better than Pillars of the Earth, which was captivating too but tediously long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thing since "Pillars of the Earth", 23 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Place Called Freedom (Paperback)
This is the type of story at which Follet seems to excell. It does not quite have the grip that Pillars of the Earth had, but then that was one of the best books of all time so hardly surprising. It does however come very very close. The story of the underdog who makes good, in spite of all the odds, as well as characters which come to life. Some you hate some you love and some you love to hate. It all makes the book difficult to put down. Leaves the reader wondering did this really happen or was it really fiction?
