Amazon.co.uk Review

You might not see the supporting merchandise so much nowadays but Pokemon is still the most successful games franchise in history. Diamond and Pearl sold 5 million copies in Japan in under three months and 1 million in America in just one month, breaking all records for the year and the series. At first sight though this looks disappointingly similar to the existing games, with only a subtle 3D effect for the game world and largely static 2D battles. However the gameplay has undergone a complete overhaul, adding numerous new features and reintroducing others from Gold/Silver/Crystal, that had previously been removed.

The basics are still the same though, as you venture out into the world (called Sinnoh this time) in an attempt to catalogue each and every pokemon and battle the evil Team Galactic. Catching and training a pokemon for combat also works the same as before, although beauty and talent contests have been greatly expanded for those that prefer as little violence as possible. The game includes a day and night cycle, which severely impacts the appearance of pokemon, and you are given a new gadget called a poketch which starts as a simple watch but can be upgraded to everything from a scanner to a map. Secret bases are back and considerably more sophisticated than before but the most important new feature by far is the online mode. You can now trade, chat and battle with fans from around the world – proving that progress is not always just a case of better graphics.

Product Description

Pokemon Pearl is a traditional Pokemon RPG that takes place in a region called Sinnoh.

In the Sinnoh region, there are two Pokemon that symbolize the region. They appear in the Sinnoh reigon`s myths and old folklore. One is called Dialga, and is said to have the power to control time. The other is called Palkia, who is said to have the ability to distort space. The sinister organization called Team Galaxy is trying to rule the region by utilizing these two Pokemon`s power. During your adventure to complete your Pokedex and become the Champion, these two Pokemon, and Team Galaxy, will intertwine into the story and lead you on a fantastic journey across the Sinnoh region.

When you set off on your travels, you`ll be able to play as either a boy or girl Trainer. You will also utilize the DS`s dual slots to transfer Pokemon from the GBA Pokemon games and be able to link up with Pokemon Ranger to access more special content. Pokemon fans have caught glimpses of Mime Jr., Lucario, Munchlax and Weavile in Pokemon movies, and these Pokemon will be debuting in this adventure.

  • Worldwide battles and trading using WiFi.
  • Real-time clock feature changes the time of day based on the DS clock. The Pokemon you can catch vary based on the region and the time of day. Also, certain Pokemon moves` power changes based on time.
  • More elaborate Pokemon Contests. Players can use the accessories and dress up their Pokemon. Players make "Poffin" out of Berries to rasie their Pokemon`s contest stats.
  • New dual-type Pokemon, new/altered moves, and new special abilities add to the already deep strategy of Pokemon battling.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST GAME EVER!!!, 25 Jan 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I love this game! Although this is my first pokemon game, I've had other DS games before, like Zelda, Nintendogs, and Mariokart. This game is HUGEEEEEEEEEEE. There is so much to do. Just when you think the game is over, there is something else to do. I thought after obtaining all 8 gym badges and beating the Elite 4 plus the Champion (Cynthia), the game was over. I then discovered that you could catch Heatron, and also start to build up your Pokedex. I've managed to catch Palkia, Uxie and Azelf, but is still trying to catch Mesprit, who keeps running away. I've managed to get her level down to yellow, and can't wait to catch her eventually. In the meantime, I can battle in the Battle zone and rechallenge the Elite 4 as often as I want, to level-up my Pokemons and earn more money. I've also managed to eventually evolve Riolu into the Great Lucario.
You can challenge a friend and I understand that you can also go online to trade or challenge other people, but I've not done that yet.
All I can say, is BUY this game. It's more than FANTASTIC!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic, yet brand new!, 29 April 2007
By Wuffles (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
After recently obtaining this game from the States, the experience has been nothing less than awesome.
Not properly executed since Gold/Silver, the night/day system is back! Of the new Pokemon introduced (over 100) the time system treats you with new events and Pokemon at different times of the day. The atmosphere is beautifully pulled off, with orange tints to the game in the evening and lights switched on in the building at night.
The new Pokemon are a real treat, although you may find some disappointment that you're still getting your Ratatta and Pidgey equivalent in the game, rather than a complete new line-up. But if that's what you know and love, then this game will only satisfy you further!
Not only that, but finally, you can obtain majority of the 493 Pokemon within the game and transfer between your older Advance generation (Ru/Sa/Em/FR/LG) are possible through Pal Park.
The graphics, although still much the same despite the new system, are beautiful and colourful. They match the game perfectly with its slightly pseudo-3D environment. You might be disappointed though if you expected a real update.
Although, perhaps the most alluring feature of the game is the new WiFi system, allowing you to battle and trade your precious Pokemon all over the world. This also includes voice chats amoung mutual friends.
However, one must be aware of the faults of the game.
- nothing has really changed dramatically, except the addition of WiFi
- there is on random battle system with other players in the WiFi, forcing you to find your own means of contacting someone
- the WiFi is heavily exploited at the moment, with illegal and hacked Pokemon being fought and traded with. One must be aware of scammers and hackers if they don't want to lose their hard-earned legal Pokemon
- there is still only one save file, so sharing your game is still not easy

Final Highlights:
- new day/night system integrated
- WiFi trading and battling
- New Pokemon, boosting the current number to 493!
- Beautiful music and atmosphere
- Lots to do with contests, new events and a whole new world!

Conclusion: If people are expecting a new game, you'll be disappointed. But for all you Pokefans out there, this will tickle-you-pink with everything that is included. For those waiting, roll on June!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra features of Pokemon Pearl/Diamond, 9 April 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
In this new addition to the series you lose the pokenav and get in turn a watch, at first it seems dull (with only a map and the time) but as you go on it has up to 25 functions including how your pokemon are feeling, an alarm (from nintendo events) and a berry watcher, which tells you when berries you have planted are ripe.
No longer do you make pokeblock either but instead BREAD! Though the game calls it Pofin.
If you place your copy of sapphire, emerald, ruby, leaf green or fire red into the game boy advance slot then an extra 8 pokemon (from that game) will be available in the safari zone until the cartridge is removed. BUT BEWARE if you are using a different region ( ours is PAL america is NTSC etc. )game from the ds version this will fail, even though handheld games are region free they can only mix records if from the same region.
Also, as you would guess, there are 107 new pokemon the starters of which being:-
GRASS Turtwig (tutle), WATER Piplup (penguin) and FIRE Chimchar (monkey)
Enjoy the new game along with the 14 new legendary pokemon it brings!
