5.0 out of 5 stars Great modern folk album, 31 Aug 2007
This review is from: Peacetime (Audio CD)
I wasn't a big Eddi Reader fan, liked the odd pop thing in the past. But this is a wonderful album. Warm, melodic, clever and intelligent. I came to this through hearing Eddi singing backing vocals on a Kate Rusby album, who is one of my favourites. Kate's partner John McCusker also produces this album and does a really good job he is probably now one the UKs best acoustic and folk producer. The album also has some great musicians playing on it.

If you like contemporary folk, roots and acoustic music such as Kate Rusby or Show of Hands buy this. But don't be put off by the folk tag it's a great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peacetime - Eddi Does It Again, 24 Jan 2007

The brand new album from Eddi Reader Peacetime is a must have for any music loving people out there. The last album of Robbie Burns material gave us a taster of things to come and Eddi has teamed up with John McCusker and Boo Hewerdine among others to bring us this great album. The album has a simple approach - highlighting Eddi's distinctive voice and great musicians. My favourites have to be Muddy Water, Aye Waukin-O, Prisons, The Shepherd's Song and Should I Pray. The songs will no doubt come into their own when done live by Eddi and the band - this i cannot recommend enough. What stands out is that Eddi continues to deliver excellent material and does what she wants her way, new artists keep emerging but Eddi continues to be a consistent voice on record and live. As an Eddi fan i play alot of her material on Pure 107.8FM in Stockport, Cheshire and will continue to do so with material like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music from the heart, 17 Jan 2007

I downloaded this album ahead of its physical release and, for the past few weeks, I have been utterly entranced. A couple of years after her acclaimed Robert Burns album, "Peacetime" too is infused with some of Burns' spirit - not least on the achingly beautiful "Aye Waukin-O". This time around, however, the traditional music knits together with new songs. The blend is virtually seamless and I found myself having to check authorship from time to time. The new songs are stunning but "Safe As Houses," "Should I Pray?" and "Galileo (Someone Like You)" manage to stand proud even in an album this good. "The Shepherd's Song" manages to straddle the old/new divide by itself, being a traditional tune with new lyrics added. It is set in an unexpected brass arrangement. The marriage of this unusual arrangement and the song's gorgeous poignancy make it somehow redolent of Rufus Wainwright's best work.

The instrumentation and arrangements are studied without being prissy or self-conscious and mesh beautifully with Reader's incredible voice. "Peacetime" is a cohesive and warming album that would beautify any music collection. Very highly recommended.
