Product Description

Description

The Norwegian quartet Shining plays high-octane prog rock with the untamed energy of newly minted punks, though their various lengthy experimental pieces are highly focused and performed with a great degree of technical prowess. Influencedby such genre-bending iconoclasts as the 1960s prog rock progenitors Soft Machine and '00s keepers of the flame the Mars Volta, the band's feats of musical dexterity span the dizzying changes of the saxophone outing "The Red Room" and the alternately pulverizing and delicate "Stalemate Longan Runner".

5.0 out of 5 stars An amalgamation of a million different sub-genres, 11 Dec 2007
By zengiz (Underworld, The) - See all my reviews
This is an absolutely astounding corker of a career move. The debut, In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster, was good enough, but this one somehow amazingly surpasses its predecessor in more ways than one. Firstly, the pace is consistently good throughout every song, the scope seemingly echoing with loudness, it's past the stage of being always on the verge of bursting, it is always bursting, not unlike like the M83 Dead Cities... album, only this is much more complex in its uncompromising and uplifting quirky blink-and-you'll-miss-it melodies. It moves so fast and drunkenly staggers along; although quite stupidly as you do when under the influence but also in a very intelligent sense, and that's what really sets this talented group of musicians apart from any other experimental band. Paradoxically enough, they deliver the unnecessary chops of hits in spades, that in turn becomes necessary and aesthetically pleasing to the ear.
