Product Description

Chilling '70s British film dealing with loneliness and the nature of trust. Brenda (Rita Tushingham) is a lonely, dowdy young woman who occupies herself writing children's stories. Feeling that her native Liverpool is holding her back, she moves to London and tries to join the cool scene there. Working in a trendy boutique and living with a man-eater with a heart of Gold, she soon finds that she's too plain to be taken in by the movers and shakers. Desolate, she resorts to some strange behaviour to meet people: kidnapping a dog belonging to a handsome stranger she's seen around. Peter (Shane Bryant), the dog's owner, seems the first man to really try to get to know her and their relationship blossoms, despite its unconventional tone. Peter, it turns out, has a skeleton or two in his closet - perhaps even literally. Widely regarded as one of Hammer Films' most disturbing and accomplished pictures - no longer tied to the formulaic capes, hair and teeth horror genre, they here utilise a more psychological method.

My Thoughts: Straight on 'Til Morning is a surprising film to come out of Hammer Productions and is not at all keeping with the normal kind of film you would expect to come out of the camp and over-exaggerated horror of the seventies. This film is a pleasant, yet startling thought provoking film that is guaranteed to leave you wondering. The acting is still somewhat campy, but doesn't necessarily degrade the quality of the story, which in itself is quite interesting for its time.

The Plot: Brenda, a shy and naive young woman decides to leave home after revealing to her mother that she is pregnant while secretly not being pregnant but desperate for a child of her own. Brenda finds it hard to fit in with people, and even harder to adapt to the promiscuous mod scene her flatmate lives by.

By chance, Brenda happens upon a scraggy dog who's owner is looking for it. Desperate to meet the handsome owner, she kidnaps the dog only to return him the next day. Peter Clive, the dogs owner, is beautifully handsome but strangely reserved and charmed somewhat by Brenda, inviting her to move in with him.

Despite being slightly unnerved by his quiet and strangely aloof way, Brenda can't help but feel besotted about him, unaware that the charming handsome gentleman is also a deadly killer with an obsession with destroying all things beautiful.

This is a brilliant film, Rita Tushingham inspires sympathy as the naive girl from Liverpool in search of a father for a desperately wanted baby who unwittingly hooks up with Peter, played by the stunningly gorgeous Shane Briant.
However, he is completely crackers. And a murderer. Despite these personality flaws I found myself feeling more sympathy for him than her. Maybe because he is so beautiful, I dont know, but I really enjoyed the film and would recommend it.

I agree with the reviewer who found this a very fine film indeed. I, too, feel that the film is very attention-holding and unusual for a 'Hammer horror' (employing, as it does, intelligent cross-cutting of flashback scenes and 'now' sequences, plus a contemporary look and feel to the society depicted). It is brilliantly acted by Shane Briant (whom some will find incredibly sexy and appealing, with his androgynous appearance) and Rita Tushingham, as the well-intentioned but hopelessly naive, lonely dreamer. One feels pity and compassion for both of these characters. The story uses clever reverse patterning (Rita's character is the girl who is unhappy because she is so 'unattractive', while Shane's character is deeply disturbed because he is so gorgeous!). The commentary on this DVD is disappointing, however, as it is somewhat superficial, and it is true that Sothcote (not sure of the spelling of his name!) does indeed make a few factual / interpretative errors (one gets the feeling that he had not studied the film very carefully before discussing it with Rita Tushingham). The film's theme song is very atmospheric, I think, and the music generally is quite evocative of the period. In any case, I recommend the film to anyone who likes a good psychological thriller and is able to feel compassion for those (however evil or demented) on the margins of 'normal' or sane society.

Naive single mother-to-be Rita Tushingham moves away from her mother's in Liverpool to London in order to find a father for her baby. Here she meets the incredibly charming and charismatic Shane Briant, in his film debut, but falls deeper and deeper under the psychopath's spell while you realise the same thing has happened to countless women in the past. Will she realise before it's too late?

It's beautifully acted, directed, has a great score and is emotionally shocking. Not normal Hammer fare, it's one of Hammer's best but also stands up as a great thriller in it's own right.

Well there are some films that stay in your mind forever and this is such a film. I remember it as being on television when I was still in school and marvelling in it then. I couldn't remember the title though so had to read half of a Movie Guide book to find it! It was a delight when I discovered that it was available on DVD and it does survive the test of time. Adore the 70s fashion this adds to the film's beauty. It is a beautiful and rather tragic film of a "plain jane" finding her "handsome prince," but it's not as it seems. Brenda is playing a dangerous game falling in love with a complete stranger she clearly knows nothing about. He is gorgeous and she is sadly naive and desperate and unfortunately a tad stupid as well.

I felt sorry for Brenda, but somehow I couldn't quite feel angry towards him, he is just too gorgeous for words - too bad he is sick and twisted.

An unusual film for Hammer, a novelty and a real gem to add to a DVD collection.

When this was up on The Horror Channel, it was Rita Tushingham's name that caught my eye, her brilliant acting and intensity laying down an intriguing gauntlet.

With Radio Times not even giving a review, or even a rating, I was worried that it might be dreadful and true, many could see some parts as such, especially if they had taken them out of context and not watched it all the way through. However, from its opening, it was obvious that this was a well-made and directed (by Peter Collinson) little movie.

Not only is it a good and interesting snapshot of swinging London, it is also a warped fairytale about a reclusive serial killer. Who's the beauty and who is the beast? Should we and can we be loved for beauty alone?

Describing the story is unnecessary; it is a shortish film and it's the issues involved, often psychological and deeply sinister plus the often imaginative directing that are the plusses. The acting of the leads Tushingham and Shane Briant are very good with just the right amount of every emotion going. The popular James Bolam also co-stars.

There is often a sense of unease, even during the less intense parts. Oddness also often takes a lead but never enough for us to dismiss them. The most intense, X-Rated (still certificate 18) scenes are disturbing rather than graphic but they still shock.

I was surprised to see so many reviews up here on Amazon, I thought it was going to be an unknown rarity. Unlike many Hammer Horror's, it remains memorable, the ordinariness mixing with the oddness plus the central characters making for an unusual and compelling mix. I enjoyed it.
