Synopsis
Reclusive horror director Boris Arkadin invites four actors to his mansion in order to star in his latest film. But does he have a horror film in mind or something more sinister? Since his heavily pregnant wife was murdered in 1975 by a cult--a nod to the Sharon Tate murder by Charles Manson’s followers--Arkadin has lived in seclusion. He then decides to make a film about the murders and recruits four actors for an extended audition at his home. The group of actors are constantly monitored by cameras. But is Boris shooting a horror film or a snuff film? Director Bernard Rose--most famous for the horror films CANDYMAN and PAPERHOUSE--skilfully looks at the thin lines that separate voyeurism, horror films, sadism, and actual death. Although this territory has been examined before in MY LITTLE EYE, SNUFF MOVIE succeeds in bringing something fresh to the genre that merges the concepts of fiction and reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film., 29 Aug 2007
By dragon0303 (UK) - See all my reviews

I really hope these one star reviewers aren't confusing this with the film 'Snuff' (which really does deserve only one star) because it'd be a shame if people were put off this film by a misunderstanding.

Or perhaps it's just too clever &/or confusing for them? It twists and turns all over the place, in fact I've never seen a movie do so many u-turns! Maybe it's just too much for some people to keep up with and understand - and again it'd also be a shame for anyone to be put off for that reason.

This may not be a Candyman type horror movie (and maybe that's the problem they have - it's not a high budget conventional horror film), but even with a lower budget, Bernard Rose shows he's a great director. I only wish he'd made more horror movies over the years.

Anyway, I love this film and I can honestly say it's got better with each viewing, which is something I can't say for many films and as of yet I have not lost the urge to watch it over and over - surely the sign of a great film. If you like horror, but don't have 'big budget Hollywood' hang-ups and aren't afraid to watch something a little bit different, give this a go.

2.0 out of 5 stars The biggest missed opportunity I think I've ever seen!, 16 Jan 2008
For starters: Yes, this film is complete garbage from start to finish. It's badly directed, badly acted, badly paced, badly choreographed, badly everything! We all may be able to slag it off half-hartedly, BUT, it IS clever.

I think the Candyman director had the right idea, but the total lack of budget makes it all seem worse than an actual snuff movie! The trouble is, it would have been good if the director kept all his shots snuff movielike- this way, we could have had a kind of Blair Witch contender, but instead we have a mix from very filmic shots, to ones as though shot by a 4 year old.

Overall, it's only worth keeping for the ideas and the wierdness, other wise, it's just about worthy of taking up space in your bin.
