Synopsis

Based on the detective novels of Caroline Graham and filmed in the lush English countryside, the massively popular ITV1 series MIDSOMER MURDERS probes the criminal undercurrents lurking beneath the idyllic surface of village life in the fictional Midsomer. The charmingly unflappable Inspector Barnaby (John Nettles) is on hand to thwart any criminal wrongdoers, solving the most complex of cases with his keen intuition and the help of his young partner Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey). Features four of the most popular episodes: THE KILLINGS AT BADGER'S DRIFT, WRITTEN IN BLOOD, STRANGLER'S WOOD and DEAD MAN'S ELEVEN.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you turn a stone in a village, one never knows what one will discover, 4 Nov 2007
By Klaus van Amelrode "kmcva" - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
Something on this line was said by one of the most famous "village detectives" of all times: Mrs. Marple.

And this is the essence of the Midsomer Murders. In the idyllic setting of the English countryside murder and deceit is lurking. Inspector Barnaby and his sergeant Troy follow the leads and discover the truth. It is a quite, sometimes funny, never too bloody, not the typical US style of crime investigation with massive chases, but an interesting and captivating one. It is highly enjoyable and the actors create theirs characters in a great way. Barnaby's wife and daughter lend support and character to the cast and humanize the main characters.

I can not at all understand why the previous reviewer trashed the Midsommer Murders. I enjoyed every episode and I am very sure you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspending disbelief, 18 Nov 2007
Surely reviewers such as Edna Sweetlove must realise that people actually considering purchasing DVD's of series such as Midsomer have, actually, already seen an episode (...or six...) on the box and, therefore, realise what level of disbelief suspension is required!
Midsomer is not about realism, it's about the creation of a quintissentially English stage, set with quintissentially English characters. The fact that this stageset has probably never actually existed has nothing at all to do with anything!
The creation of Midsomer is a resounding success (...how many series...?) and everyone who loves a gentle, non-gory whodunnit, wants to spend a week there (...preferably not as a victim...!) to take in the beautiful scenery, the picture-postcard cottages and meet the unique characters, in the teashop over a cup of Earl Grey, watching a murder mystery unfold!
Great stuff! Not Shakespeare it's true, but when was the last time YOU read Shakespeare?
My only problem is affording the entire collection!
Oh, and by the way, I read 'The Tempest' only last month.

I order a lot of older TV programmes for my elderly mother & she loved Midsomer Murders. She is partially disabled so her DVD collection is invaluable to her - Amazon usually have what she wants to order!
