Description

The multimedia Steely Dan collector's bonanza NIGHTFLY includes all three of Dan frontman Donald Fagen's solo albums: THE NIGHTFLY, KAMAKIRIAD, and MORPH THE CAT, plus bonus tracks, audio interviews, music videos, and more. When Fagen's 1982 solo debut, THE NIGHTFLY, was first released, its smooth,accessible textures seemed like a natural extension of Steely Dan's 1980 album, GAUCHO. Revealing as much about what Fagen's bandmate Walter Becker brought to the Dan mix, NIGHTFLY and its two successors are more subtle in their subversionthan Becker and Fagen's group efforts. While they offer a similarly rich sonic menu that sounds just as meticulously constructed, there's not as much jazz roughage, and the irony is buried a bit deeper. If you squint really hard, you couldalmost mistake these crafty cuts for straight pop music.

OK ... So you get the three original Donald Fagen albums, all of which are masterpieces and when you play the CD of bonus audio tracks, you realise that most bands would give anything to produce material half as good as Donald Fagen has thrown on the editing floor. That's the positive side. On the downside, you have to say that audio quality is disappointing. The CDs don't appear to have been remastered and the DVD discs are the iPod/PC/game console friendly MVI. You get Dolby 5:1 and DTS 5:1 tracks but the high resolution track is PCM stereo. The packaging is poor as well. There's no booklet to accompany the set so no notes on the albums or unseen photos. Mr. Fagen has hardly put his heart and soul into this project. Find another way to get the CD of unreleased material and seek out the original high resolution DVD-A discs. If you own the original albums, don't bother with this set. It gets five stars for musical content but only two for audio quality and presentation.

Donald Fagen's three solo classics--The Nightfly, Kamikiriad, and Morph The Cat--reissued in a 7-Disc Music Video Interactive (MVI) box set, produced in collaboration with Donald himself.
Each title is on its own MVI disc featuring the entire original album along with DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital and Advanced Resolution PCM Stereo mixes, plus rare and previously unreleased bonus audio tracks and interviews.
Each disc also features bonus content including videos, rare footage, complete lyrics, a custom ringtone application, special weblinks, and more. There will also be four audio CDs: the first three feature the three original albums, while the fourth will include all of the bonus tracks (except for interviews). Expanded booklets include liner notes and track-by-track commentary by Donald.
Personally I think that Becker and Fagen were better than Lennon and McCartney, their music has always had a huge following, but they were never that popular with "pop" music fans, however I know there is not a day goes by when you won't hear a Steely Dan song on the radio, that cannot be said of the Beatles.
Donald Fagen is a musical genius, his blend of Jazz/Rock is timeless and will always sound fresh.
Buy it and fill your boots with sumptuous sounds.
NOTE:
The MVI discs are playable in DVD players, computers and some games consoles but, crucially, not in CD players.

These MVI represent what is wrong with the Music industry at the moment.
What have these got:
MP3s to copy direct to your computer
DVDs with DTS surround
Interviews
Bonus material
Previously hard to get songs

Yet these are not as good as the original DVDA releases, why Lossless surround rather than Lossy MLP DVDA.
CD's which you anyone with any ability can rip their own MP3 tracks from.

Why would anyone buy these when they are not as good as those albums as they previously were released on DVDA.
